Published by Ottawa Citizen on Apr. 5, 2014.
HANNINGTON, Fred
Colonel (Ret.) CD, BA
RCAF Navigator 426, 437
and 404 Squadrons
Dominion Secretary, R.C. Legion
It is with love and sadness that we announce the passing of Fred on April 3, 2014 at the age of 83. Born on May 31, 1930 to the late Christine (née McBrine) and Frederick Hannington; dear brother to the late Edwin. Fred was the beloved and devoted husband of Shirley (née MacDonald) for 60 years; loving father of Fred (Ruth), Steven (Gail), and Mark (Elizabeth). He will be sadly missed by his grandchildren Veronica, Steven, Annemarie, Daniel, and Alex and also by his many nieces and nephews. Fred was born in the small town of Glassville, New Brunswick, where he learned responsibility and self- reliance at an early age. After graduating from Teachers College at the University of New Brunswick, Fred taught in a one-room school house in Juniper, New Brunswick. In 1949, he was commissioned as an Air Navigator Officer and served in Maritime Air, Air Defence and Air Transport units. While serving in the RCAF, Fred completed graduate school in Public Administration and Defence Studies. His 37-year career in the Armed Forces included duties in recruiting, instructing at the Maritime and Air Transport flying units, NATO Plans and Policy, SHAPE Strategic Studies, and NORAD Evaluation. He served as Commander of Site Pin on the DEW Line and as CO of the AMU in Lahr, Germany. He took part in service operations in the UK, North Africa, the Mediterranean, the Congo, and Indochina. He participated in national and peacekeeping airlift operations in the Middle East, Africa, Asia, South America, Europe, and Canada, as well as serving in Chile, where he was awarded the Chilean Air Force wings. In 1985 after a long and distinguished career, Fred retired from the Armed Forces, and was appointed Dominion Secretary of The Royal Canadian Legion, where he also served as Secretary Treasurer Canvet Plublishing Ltd. (Legion Magazine) until 1995. During that time he continued to serve with the CF Reserves and as a Director of the Friends of the Canadian War Museum. He sat on the Board of Directors of the Perley and Rideau Veterans' Health Centre and was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the RCAF Benevolent Fund. Throughout his life, Fred was widely respected by all who knew him for his dignity and leadership. Among his numerous awards are the Canadian Forces Decoration, Centennial Medal, 125 Anniversary of Confederation Medal, Special Service Medal, Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal, and the Royal Canadian Legion Meritorious Service Medal. The family wishes to express our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at Peter D. Clark, Bungalow 2, for their kind and loving care. We will also be forever grateful to our friend, Bill Penfold, for his kind support. Friends and colleagues are invited to Pinecrest Remembrance Centre, 2500 Baseline Road, Ottawa, on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at 1 p.m. to attend a Legion Ceremony followed by a Remembrance Service. A reception and Interment to follow in the gardens. Donations may be made in Fred's honour to the War Amps or the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund. Deepest sympathy from District K Bursary Chair and our District.

There is much to remember and much to be thankful for as we remember Comrade Fred Hannington, and the way he shared his life with those around him. Each of us gives gifts of ourselves to those we share life with. These are gifts that no one can take away. Though we are gone, these gifts remain with those to whom we have given them. Our condolences go to his family friends and comrades and thank him for his dedication to his country, community and Legion. He will always have a special place for those he served.

We lived on the same street as neighbors for decades and the wonderful memories of Fred stopping to chat on his daily walks and the many fun street barbeques and parties will forever be with us. We extend our deepest sympathies to you and your whole family Shirley. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
