SALEM — Mr. Fred Thomas Kozlowski, 90, beloved husband of the late Gloria M. (Marquis) Kozlowski, died Friday morning, Feb. 5, 2010 at Beverly Hospital.

Born in Lynn, he was the son of Lithuanian immigrants, Vladas "Wallace" and Antonina "Ethel" (Galezkute) Kazlauskas. He was raised and educated in Lynn.

An honorably disabled discharged veteran, he served his country as a member of the United States Army during World War II. Private 1st Class Kozlowski, served in England, France and Germany. As a teenager, he built a small sailboat and thus began a long career as a boat builder.

After World War II he continued with a G.I. Bill, sponsored apprenticeship at Graves Boat Yard in Marblehead. He then founded his own business, Fred's Boat Shop, on Franklin Street in Salem. He owned and operated this business nearly until the time of his death and his love of boats and the ocean never waned. He resided by the sea on Juniper Cove in Salem and fished for lobster on a small scale. He had many friends among boaters and commercial fisherman on the North Shore. He also worked as a building contractor and later as a boat builder at the Boston Naval Shipyard.

Fred was a longtime member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Salem and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Fred is survived by his daughters, Sandra Lee (Kozlowski) Budzinski and her husband Robert Charles of Ipswich and Deborah Rose Kozlowski of White River Junction, Vt.; his granddaughter, Tracy (Budzinski) Burke of Essex and Brett Budzinski of North Andover; his four great-grandchildren; his sister, Gladys Luciano of Arizona; his brother, Wilhelm Kozlauska of Lynnfield; his niece, Carol Hand and his nephew, John Kozlauska.

Losing Fred is a big loss. A great neighbor and always helpful with many of my projects given to him over the years. Fred WAS one-of-a-kind and I will always remember him with fondness.

Very sorry to have arrived at the IC Chapel too late to honor Fred; though I hadn't seen him since I was about 15, when he lived next door to the Merrows, my mother and father used to be so close to the Marquis family that I wanted to see the family again.
