Fred Potts, 84, of Nancy, Ky., passed away Saturday, March 21, 2009 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. He was born May 21, 1924 in Irvine, Ky. to the late Harry and Francis Potts. Fred's accomplishments through his life were: A graduate of Wittenberg University with degrees in Bachelors in Science of Education and a Bachelors in Art in 1954 and 1955 respectively; a teacher at the high school level in Springfield, Ohio; 10 years with the Marine Corp; retired after 34 years of Civil Service at Wright Patterson Air Force Base as a Computer Programmer. During this period he also became an accomplished pilot, a scuba diver (and an instructor of the sport). Fred had a long history with the boy scouts, first as a boy scout, then as a Scout Master and then volunteering with Boy Scout Troop 727 as his boys grew from Cubs to Eagles. Over the course of many years he was also a swimming instructor at the YMCA, and was a foster parent to children. He was also a Wayne County Deputy for 27 years, finally retiring at age 82. He was a member of the Mason's Siever's Lodge 491 of Nancy, Somerset Council of Shriner's #68, Somerset Commandery #31 and #5, American Legion Post 0088, The Republican Party and life member of the Marine Corp League.Fred is survived by his wife, Sharon A. Potts, his children: Douglas Potts (Carolyn), Grand Rapids, Mich.; Ronald D. Potts, Sarasota, Fla.; Linda Stumbo (fiancé, Jeffery Rogers), Springfield, Ohio; Robert Edwards (Rachel), Springboro, Ohio; Craig Potts (Stacy), Science Hill, Ky.; and Ronald J. Potts, Nancy, Ky.; 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by five sisters: Viola Bryan(Merle), Englewood, Fla.; Helen Kennon (William), Englewood, Fla.; Ann Baker, Springfield, Ohio; Clara Cline, Springfield, Ohio; Roberta (Bobbi) Eaton, San Antonio, Texas and sister-in-law, Carolyn Wolfe (Harvey), Laguana Woods, Calif. He also had many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Francis Potts and one brother, Harry.Visitation for Fred Potts will be Thursday, March 26, 2009 at 6 p.m. at the Nancy Funeral Home. A funeral ceremony honoring the life of Fred Potts will be held Friday, March 27, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Nancy Funeral Home with Bro. Murrell Crockett officiating. Burial will follow in the Lakeside Memorial Gardens Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, the Potts family request that donations can be made to the Shriner's Hospital, 1900 Richmond Rd., Lexington, Ky. 40502.Condolences may be expressed to the Potts family at www.somersetundertaking.com.
