It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Fred Shields on September 8, 2016. Beloved husband of the late Claudette (Villeneuve). Proud and loving father of Michael (Ellen), Gary (Claire) and Wayne (Carolyn). Cherished grandfather of Samantha, Haley and Sydney. Dear brother of Helen (Marcel) and Linda (Norman). Fred was predeceased by his brother Bob and his sister Joan (Pierre). Long-time love and companion of Kitty and her sons Brian (Stephanie and Alexis) and Danny (Danielle). Fred made many friends over the years and will be dearly missed by all, including his lifelong friend Gerry Albert. Family and friends may pay respects at the

Wednesday, September 14, 2016 from 5-9 p.m. and again on Thursday, September 15, 2016 from 9:30 -11:30 a.m. A private family interment will take place at a later date at Hope Cemetery. It has been many years since I have seen or spoken to Fred but what I can remeber was he was always funny, kind and in good spirits. I worked at the Ottawa Citizen many years ago we always had a laugh or too. He spoke very fondly of you Kitty loved you deeply. So sorry to hear of his passing. He was a good man.

Fred was a giver. There weren't many who didn't benefit from his generosity. Whether it was for a simple donation to their favorite charity, volunteering as a coach, mentor, driver, or barman, or even completely organizing a community event or celebration. He never missed an opportunity to lend a hand.
And everyone in the city knew him! We always referred to him as the Mayor of Hintonburg (or Mechanicsville as it is known to you older folk). He will be missed by many.
