TURKO, Fred
September 4, 1925 – Waskatenau, Alberta
June 26, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta
Fred Turko of Calgary, passed away peacefully with his daughter and family at his side on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at the age of 92 years.
Fred, affectionately known as "Pops" to his family, was the fourth born of twelve children. Fred grew up and worked on the farm. He met the love of his life, Mary and they were married in 1948, starting out in Calgary where he worked for CPR as a pipefitter on the steam locomotives. He and Mary then moved back to the Newbrook area where he became a park warden with the Provincial Parks Service. They had four children, William, Patricia, Christopher and Rosemary. Fred built and managed Long Lake Provincial Park, then from there moved to Wabamun Lake and then to Pigeon Lake Provincial Park where he retired in 1986. He and Mary with their own hands built their retirement home in Winfield and years later moved back to Calgary where they've lived since.
Fred will always be remembered for the love that he shared, the honesty that he lived by, the true compassion he felt for others, his great sense of humor, and his love of life. His home and heart was always full of family and friends, and he was loved by so many.
Fred will be forever in the hearts of his surviving daughter Rosemary (Don) Luft; and grandchildren, Evan and Kayle Luft, Kane Turko (Ashley), Krista Turko-Block (Ben), Jordan Turko, Fred and Robert Zotzman; great-grandchildren, Ty and Aspen Turko, and Ava Block; daughter-in-law Shirley Zotzman; sisters Eva Hrycun, Rosie Hrycun, Helen (Howard) Hayden and Emily (Glen) Ollikka; brothers Bill and Mike (Leonie) Turko; as well as many nieces and nephews. Fred was predeceased by his beloved wife Mary; his daughter Patricia and his sons William and Christopher; and by his parents Mike and Rose Turko, Alex Penchuk; his brothers John, Nick and Anton; and sisters Pauline Melnychuk and Mary McKee.
A Celebration of Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home. I am so sorry to hear of your dad and grandpa's passing. It was nice to spend a bit of time around him last year and it was so cute how he would go sit beside Larry so they could have a little drink together, just a smiling. He was such a gentle soul. You were blessed to have him and blessings to you all during this difficult time.

Fred(The Cornel). Will always be remembered with a smile for his great sense of humour. He had a way of bringing out the humour of any situation with his infectious love of life. All the park staff he worked with over the years will have fond memories of Fred.

Dear Family
Our condolences to the Turko family. The William and Katie HRYCUN family have fond and cherished memories of Fred. The older children of both famiies have great memories of walking to school and playing ball at the community picnics. When our new house was bing built, Fred did most of the inside work by painting all the rooms and varnishing all the wood work. Fred also worked with our brother Paul, at the Long Lake Prov. Park with memorable stories. He will always be in our hearts.
