Fred Turner Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on May 14, 2010.

TURNER, Fred Our Dad, Fred Turner, laid down his baton for the final time on Friday, May 7, 2010. Dad was born in Vancouver on October 23, 1916 and lived a long and productive life. He was involved in music at an early age and it remained his passion throughout his life. He was instrumental in the formation of the New Westminster and District Concert Band and remained active in that organization from the early forties until the nineties. He was a pioneer in the development of music education as it exists in B.C. schools today. Dad was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and he will be missed by all in our family. He was pre-deceased by his mother, father, two brothers and a sister. The passing of his beloved wife, Merle, in 2007 was a pivotal point in his long life, as their marriage lasted for 68 loving years and her death, in 2007 caused him terrible grief. Dad is survived by his daughter Lorna (Mike Scanlan), sons Kerry (Gail) and Tom (Tami and her two children). He also leaves quite a legacy in his nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, his sisters-in-law Maxine Howarth and Libby Turner. Dad spent the last year of his life in care at Langley Gardens. Our family extends its gratitude to the staff at Empress Suites and the third floor care facility for their wonderful attention to Dad's needs. There will be a celebration of Fred's life held on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at the Hazelmere Golf and Country Club, 18150 - 8th Avenue, Surrey, B.C. commencing at 1:00 PM. If you are attending, please visit www.nwdband.com for further information. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to either the Alzheimer's Society of B.C. or the Multiple Sclerosis Society of BC.

Dear Kerry, Tom and Lorna,
In 1963 I was privileged to meet your dad, Fred, who had just become the new Superintendent of Music for the Vancouver School Board. I was the new Music Consultant and for the next 2 years that we worked together, I realized what an exceptional man your father was.
His wit, his discipline and his genuine interest in people and in promoting music in the schools was so evident. Through his hard work, he brought BAND music to life in the previously choral Vancouver school system.
Fred and I spent many mornings in our offices not only talking "business" but also talking about our families. He was SO proud of you, especially when you did something well in MUSIC!!
Fred generously offered the use of your "Green Lake Lodge" to my family and for several summers we enjoyed very happy times there. What great memories we have of that beautiful place!!
We have kept in touch almost 50 years, sharing all the "ups and downs" of each other's family.
I shall miss him !
My sincere sympathy to you and your families. Betty Roussy ( Hermans)

Dear Kerry, Gail and the extended Turner family,

Carole and I send you our deepest sympathy at Fred's passing.

Fred was, I believe, the inventor of the word "shamateur", a wonderful contraction of "sham" and "amateur" and he would use that word on any member of his band who did not live up to his expectations. His sense of discipline, order and pride had a very positive influence on my life many, many times as I strove never to be a "shamateur."

I hope you will take comfort from the knowledge of just how many people's lives were uplifted by their contact with Fred.

My deepest sympathy to the family on your loss. Mr. Turner was an inspiration to many generations of students and musicians. He has left an incredible legacy, both in his family and in all the other people he mentored and taught.

Fred Turner left a legacy of instrumental music in the Province of BC. His memoirs also contributed greatly to our book (in the works): "The South Vancouver and John Oliver High School Story." On behalf of the John Oliver High School Historical Society, I would like to express our condolences to the Turner family.
