FREDERICK ARNDT, SR. "FRITZ"
AGE: 88 TINTON FALLS
Frederick Arndt Sr. "Fritz", 88, died Friday, Oct. 23, 2009 at his home in Tinton Falls. Born in Newark he lived in North Arlington and Lyndhurst before moving to Tinton Falls in 2005. He was a graduate of Queen of Peace High School in North Arlington where he lettered in three sports and was elected into their Sports Hall of Fame in 1993. He served in the United States Army during World War II landing in Normandy, France, in the aftermath of the D-Day invasion, he served as an artillery gunner during campaigns in Northern France, the Ardennes, Central Europe and the Rhineland. He received a Soldier's Medal for bravery for removing explosive fuses from a burning building saving the lives of many who were trapped. He worked in the family store, Arndt's Hardware in North Arlington for over 40 years until closing the business in 1981. He then worked for Catholic Cemeteries as a supervisor in Holy Cross Chapel Mausoleum, North Arlington for 20 years retiring in 2001. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 1937, the Elks Club, Queen of Peace Holy Name Society and the Knights of Columbus Queen of Peace Council # 3428 all of North Arlington.
He was the beloved husband for 63 years of Dorothy (Jacobs) whom he met when he was 13 years old at her birthplace on the Mohawk Reservation of Kahnawake near Montreal, Canada; the devoted father of Susan Leonard and her husband Glenn, Barbara Keane and her husband Dan, Frederick R. Arndt Jr, Patricia M. Arndt, and Mary Rivard all of New Jersey and Peter Arndt and his wife Susan of London, England; the cherished grandfather of 13; the loving great-grandfather of 5 and dear brother of the late Anne Martin.
Funeral from the Parow Funeral Home, 185 Ridge Rd., North Arlington on Monday, October 26th at 12:15 p.m. thence to Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, North Arlington for the Funeral Mass at 1:15 p.m. Entombment Holy Cross Chapel Mausoleum, North Arlington. The family will receive friends on Sunday 3-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs, 136 Shrine Rd., Auriesville, N.Y. 12016 or Queen of Peace Church, 5 Franklin Place, North Arlington, N.J. 07031.

I remember "Mr. Arndt" from when I was in grade school at QP. Really nice, friendly guy and I spent a great weekend with the family at their place at "the lake" (don't remember which lake that was). I never realized that he was even in World War II, let alone a heroic member of the landing force on D-Day. Condolences to the family, especially Freddy, my classmate at QP.
