Frederick Cotton Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Feb. 10 to Feb. 11, 2009.

COTTON- FREDERICK ROWAN Born in New Westminster B.C. on September 19, 1928. Died suddenly February 4, 2009 in Vancouver B.C. Survived by his mother Helena Cotton and his loving wife Bette. Fred was a very proud and caring Canadian who had the opportunity to get to know his country well with his transfers from coast to coast during his career with Simpson Sears. He was very involved in all the communities he lived, especially as a volunteer. The people he met along the way were a great joy to him. Fred's interests were many and varied; sports which he played and was interested in all his life, politics which he cared tremendously about, finance where integrity was so important to him. A fine gentleman has left us. A celebration of his life will be held, Friday, February 13th from 2 to 4 p.m. at Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club, 4300 S.W. Marine Drive, Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, Fred would appreciate donations to Rotary International Foundation, c/o Rotary Club of Vancouver, Suite 315-475 Howe St., Vancouver, V6C 2B3. Walkey & Company Funeral Directors 604 738-0006.

I was deeply shocked to hear of Rowans passing, a great loss. I will miss his regular phone calls which kept me informed about Helen's health. The last time was in December when he arranged for me to speak directly to Helen. My heartfelt sympathy to Bette and Helen.

Hi Mrs Cotton - I guess by now I should be calling you Bette. Anyhow as a kid and teenager I remember Mr Cotton as a really nice man and friend of my parents. You of course too. As a kid and teenager, your parents friends who you remember as really nice, leave a happy lasting memory.

Thinking of you,

I always knew Fred Rowan as "Cotty"& remember him as a boyhood pal when he lived with his parents on 5th street in New Westminster across from John Macgowan's family home.I remember him as a outstanding player of the "Dukes" basketball team, also as a member of our car-pool group at UBC. We went our separate ways after that as Georgia,my late wife, & I moved to Montreal for business reasons & "Cotty" moved elsewhere. I was so happy to meet up with him at the DCHS reunion in 2005.He was a grand person & will be missed by many.
My deepest thoughts go out to his wife & to his mother- Most sincerely

Fred will always be remembered as one of my favorite people. I had the pleasure of working with him at "Sears" in Winnipeg and Vancouver and I always thought of him as having those very special personal ingredients which I wanted.

Allison and I were very sad to hear about Rowan, we have such wonderful memories, the last one being a relaxing and throoughly enjoyable lunch at the Golf Club last summer on a beautiful July day. We will miss him and think of everyone he touched with his grace and charm. Warm thoughts and prayers from Kingston.
