Frederick FURTH Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 28 to Jun. 29, 2018.
FURTH, Frederick Paul April 12, 1934 - May 12, 2018 Frederick Paul Furth passed away unexpectedly after a fall at his home in Lake Worth, Florida. He was 84. Internationally known antitrust attorney, world-class vintner, and Citation X pilot, Furth moved to Florida only two years ago. A native of Harvey, Illinois, Furth was the son of Frederick Paul Furth, Sr. and Mary Agatha Furth. He graduated from the University of Michigan, where he also completed his law education. In 1961, he and his first wife Donna Jean Wickham moved to New York City, where he worked for Cahill Gordon. After a short tenure at the Kellogg Company in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Furth moved to San Francisco to work for former Mayor Joe Alioto. He established his own firm in 1966. Furth enjoyed tremendous professional success over the years and remained active in his law practice until the end of his life. Furth moved to Sonoma County in the early 1980s and developed Chalk Hill Winery with his second wife, Peggy Jane Wollerman. Together they produced world-class wines and expanded the 1200 acre estate with culinary gardens, an elaborate equestrian center and a regulation baseball field. Following their divorce in 2009, the winery was sold but Furth remained an active presence in Sonoma County. Furth was well known for his big personality and huge spirit. He didn't travel without one of his beloved Great Danes, one of which traveled the world with him in his jet. He was the life of any party and threw quite a few good ones over the years. He always had a cigar in this mouth, and would light it whenever he got the chance. Furth is survived by his wife, Maryann Polizzi Furth of Lake Worth, Florida, his sisters Mary Jo Odell of San Anselmo, CA and Jeanne McTighe of Boulder, Colorado, his daughter Darby Furth Bonomi of San Francisco, son Ben Stearman Furth of Las Cruces, New Mexico, and three grandchildren. He was predeceased by his eldest sister Jacqueline Minor and daughter Megan Louise Furth. A memorial Mass will be said on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Windsor, CA. All are invited. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Mission Dolores Academy in San Francisco, Our Lady of Guadalupe Church or the charity of your choice.

I worked for Mr. Furth as his secretary for two years in 1998 and 1999. He was a great boss, so charming, larger than life, and it was an honor to work for him at Furth, Fahrner & Mason. Although my tenure was short, I have very fond memories of working with him and it was a constant pleasure to get to know him and his accomplishments.

Saw his Citation X parked at Launceston Airport when Freddie stopped over here in Tasmania, but sadly never got to meet him.

I have very fond memories of Fred from when I was a preteen and teenager in San Francisco. His son, Ben, was my best friend at that time and the larger-than-life persona of Fred didn't do it justice as a moniker. He was a giant in his field but made this neighborhood kid feel quite at home whether in SF or on the ranch near Santa Rosa. I had the pleasure of attending the 49ers/Dallas 1981 Championship Game with both Fred and Ben. When Ben or I or both inevitably got into mischief, Fred was there to guide us as a father should.

Fred and I were SAE's at the University of Michigan in the mid 1950's. I remember reading about the class action suit he won as a young attorney in San Francisco which led to many other successes. One time with my wife, daughter and granddaughters at the Grand Floridian Hotel at Disney World we were pleasantly surprised they served Fred's Chalk Hill Chardonnay. Later, Fred was kind enough to give my daughter, her husband and his parents a tour of his vineyard. Many fine memories of Fred and very sorry to learn of his passing.

As a friend of his sister, Mary, I met Fred only a handful of times, yet he made an indelible impression of a man larger than life, kind and generous, always out for a good time and ever mindful of where he came from. Many people's lives are poorer for his loss.

In 1976 Fred Furth ran for the Democratic nomination for the State Senate seat held by then Republican Milton Marks. I supported Fred, who was defeated by then San Francisco Supervisor Robert Mendelsohn who in turn went on to lose to Senator Marks. I remember Fred's media advertisements with his voice in which he said "Vote tough for a change." Fred Furth was great human being.
