Frederick Longacre Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 31, 2010.
In the early pre-dawn hours of Memorial Day, May 31, 2010, Frederick Gruen Longacre went home to be with God, his Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, a son of God with a simple, yet profound faith in God. Fred was named after his maternal grandfather, Fred G. Gruen, the co-founder of the Gruen Watch Company. He was the elder son of Dr. Jacob J. Longacre, a prominent plastic and reconstructive surgeon and Margaret Gruen Longacre, a noted print-maker. Fred was educated in Cincinnati attending Clifton Elementary School, Cincinnati Country Day School, Aiken High School (1966) and the University of Cincinnati. His studies and interests were vast and varied; an adventurous traveler to six continents; an avid reader and chronicler of history, geography, automobiles, cartography; a collector of antique classic American cars; a staunch conservative activist with a passion for the ‘pro-life’ cause; and a kind-hearted generous gentleman who loved to help his family and fellow man. Fred treasured his family homestead where he lived all but a few months of his sixty-two years of life. Fred never married and is survived by his brother James and his wife Marianne, nephews Christopher, Charles, Nathanael and Joshua and niece Carrie as well as great nephews Nathan and Porter and great nieces Hope, Abigail, Lauren, Camille and Kaylee. He is also survived by his cousin and Godmother, Louise Nippert. His club affiliations included the Cincinnati Country Club, The Travel Club of Cincinnati and The Bachelors. On Thursday, June 3, Visitation will be held at Miller-Busse & Borgmann Funeral Home, 3464 Central Parkway at Clifton Hills, Clifton from 6-8 PM. On Friday, June 4, there will be a visitation in the Norman Chapel of Spring Grove Cemetery from 10 AM until the time of funeral service at 11 AM. Graveside services will immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the National Right to Life or CareNet in Fred’s memory.

Fred lived across the street from me on Oxford Terrace in Cincinnati, Ohio. He always supported our grade school candy and magazine drives and he let us play in his backyard-which was our favorite place to play as kids. Many of my childhood memories are from his yard. Fred kept to himself but was very kind and generous.
