Frederick Malone Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 7, 2006.
Indiana, Indianapolis - FREDERICK DOUGLASS MALONE was born November 20, 1941 in Memphis. He was born to Dorothy Malone and Frederick Malone. Fred attended Memphis City Schools and graduated from Melrose High in 1959. Blessed with tremendous athletic ability, Fred held the unique distinction of being the captain of three sports at Melrose: football, basketball and golf. After graduating from Melrose, he earned an athletic scholarship to Fisk University in Nashville where he served as captain of the football and golf teams. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi. After college graduation, Fred enlisted in the United States Air Force. While stationed in Bitburg, Germany, Fred married Rhoda Jean Beasley in 1966. From this union were born Frederick Kevin Malone, Angela Denise Malone and Keith Samuel Malone. After serving for a number of years in the service, Fred and his family relocated to Sacramento, CA where he began his long-standing career as a football coach. He held coaching positions at Sacramento State University, the University of Oregon, and the University of California-Berkeley. Fred later became the first African-American coach in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) at Vanderbilt University in Nashville and the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. On November 16 1980, Fred and his family united with Canaan Missionary Baptist Church in Urbana, IL under the pastorale of Rev. B. J. Tatum. During his time in Illinois, Fred coached football at the University of Illinois, Campaign-Urbana. Fred's joy of coaching eventually led him to Indianapolis, IN where he spent many years teaching golf. God called Fred home on November 2, 2006 in his home in Indianapolis. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Malone, his father, Frederick Malone, and his former wife, Rhoda. Fred leaves to cherish his memory three children, F. Kevin (Renee), Angela and Keith; siblings, Delores (Delbert) Bradford, Diane Hunter, Robert Malone, and Doris (Alex) Guarra; grandchildren, Dominique and Kevin Malone; and a host of other relatives and friends. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 8 from 11 11:55 a.m. at Olivet Fellowship Baptist Church located at 4450 Knight Arnold Road. The funeral services will immediately follow at 12 p.m. A private burial for family members will be held on November 9 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Melrose High School’s Alumni Association.
