Frederick Mathis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 20, 2025.
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Frederick Wilhelm Mathis, a devoted family man, loving father and grandfather ("Papa"), and proud veteran of the United States Navy. On January 16, 2025, at the age of 58, Fred passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones.

Fred was born on October 28, 1966, in Salem, Oregon. He grew up in Ephrata, Washington, and graduated from Ephrata High School with the class of 1984.

In February 1986, Fred joined the U.S. Navy, where he proudly served his country for many years. During his service, Fred was assigned to several ships, including the USS Harry W. Hill, USS Abraham Lincoln, USS Preble, USS Tarawa, USS Paul F. Foster, USS Cushing, HMCS Restigouche, and HMCS Terra Nova.

Fred actively participated in numerous military operations, including the Persian Gulf War, Operation Earnest Will, Operation Desert Storm, Operation Desert Shield, the Global War on Terrorism, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He retired as an Operations Specialist Senior Chief Petty Officer in March 2009.

Fred was a dedicated family man who cherished his time with loved ones. He will always be remembered for his humor, intelligence, generous heart, and loving personality. Fred had a way of making everyone feel special and was always willing to help others in any way he could.

Fred lived life to the fullest, creating countless memories with family and friends. Whether fishing, hunting, skiing, snowmobiling, watching football, or hosting Super Bowl parties, Fred made every moment unforgettable. A passionate fan of the Denver Broncos, he loved cooking most of all. His culinary talents were admired by many, and his dishes were a testament to his love for life and those around him.

Fred traveled the world, lived a rich and beautiful life, and was blessed with an incredible network of family and friends. He was a strong and resilient man who fought courageously until the end.

Fred is survived by his fiance Wendy Bell; his children, James Hertel (Samantha), Renee Johnson (Charlie), and Ryan Mathis; his siblings, Kelli Steele (Brian), Daniella Mathis, Kimberly Mathis, and Patrick Mathis; and his cherished grandchildren, Calianne Hertel, Trey Mathis, Peyton Johnson, Hailey Johnson, and Ryelynn Johnson. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.

Fred was preceded in death by his wife, Paula Mathis; his parents, Bruce and Salle Mathis; and many other loved ones.

Services will be held on Sunday, March 16, 2025, at the Legion in Ephrata, Washington. The gathering will begin at 2:00 PM, followed by an Honor Guard memorial at 3:00 PM. A celebration of life will take place immediately after the Honor Guard.

glad we got to hang out at the reunion and remember Dave and the old 8th and 9th street bunch. You were a hell of a guy and a hell of a friend. You are already missed. RIP brother.
