Frederick Myers Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 21, 2024.
Frederick Lamar Myers, age 92, passed away on October 10, 2024, in Middletown, NY. Born on February 12, 1932, in Nyack, NY, Frederick, known to friends as Freddie, lived a life marked by devotion to his family and community.

Fred's early years were spent in Nyack, NY, where he attended Nyack High School. It was there he met Sheila Mackenzie, who would become his wife of 63 years. Together, they made their homes in Nyack, NY, Congers, NY, and later in Milford, PA, creating a family and a lifetime of memories.

Fred served in the US Army from 1953 to 1955, with a deployment in Korea, dedicating his service to the nation during a pivotal time. After his military service, he joined his stepfather, Jacob Vancura, in his plumbing business before becoming a long-standing member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 373.

His commitment extended into his community through his active participation at the United Methodist Church in both New City, NY, and Milford, PA. as well as over 50 years of volunteer service with Highland House Fire Company in Nyack NY.

Fred was a man of many interests, including playing the guitar, tending to his garden, and ice skating. Above all, he cherished the time spent with his family.

He is survived by his children, Karen Tenzer and her spouse Jeff, Kevin Myers and his wife Nancy, Kathy Richardson and her partner Ed Kukkula, Keith Myers and his wife Susan, and Kristen Hakey and her husband Les. Fred also leaves behind nine grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense joy. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sheila Myers (nee Mackenzie), his mother, Elizabeth Vancura, and his stepfather, Jacob Vancura.

A graveside memorial service will be held to honor Fred's life and legacy in November.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

April 1, 1958, at age 26, Fred joined Highland Hose Company No. 5, one of the eight volunteer fire companies comprising the Nyack Fire Department. The Department was formed in 1863 with the then four companies. Fred was a line officer and aided the Company immeasurably. Many in our community relied on his plumbing skills, regardless of the time of day that one would call him. Our firehouse is draped in black bunting.
