Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
Fred Harteis was born September 8, 1948 to Lawrence and Ruth Harteis. He grew up one of fourteen children in the small town of Ebensburg, Pennsylvania. It was there an adorable blue-eyed boy, full of spunk and personality learned the will to win, the drive to exceed. These things were engrained in the young farmhand from birth. Strong work ethic was essential to making the working dairy farm a success.
He attended Bishop Carroll High School where he continued to perfect his drive. He excelled in athletics, academics and 4H to name a few. After high school he attended Delaware Valley College. In typical Fred fashion, 4 years was not enough, he headed to Penn State for his masters degree with his new bride, Linda. He met his beautiful wife while working an internship at the McKean County courthouse where Linda worked. After their first meeting, they were inseparable, together ever since.
After college Fred taught woodshop and agriculture. Fred and Linda had just settled into their new lives with their first-born, Tonya, arriving 2 years later. Around this time, Fred was introduced to a new business plan. Fred knew this business was his vehicle to create the life of freedom he envisioned.
Fred was committed; he knew the door to success was just cracked open. He didn't just walk through, he kicked the door down and the fairytale began. Fred's drive for success led to unparalleled growth through the Amway business. In no time at all Fred and Linda achieved Emerald, Diamond and Double Diamond status. A true rags to riches story. Along his torrid pace of growth in business Fred and Linda welcomed two more great gifts, their second and third child. Fred's three greatest achievements were his children; Tonya, Freddy and Annie.
Personal gain was not success enough for Fred. He wanted more. He set out to change the lives of others in the same positive way his life was changed. He spent thousands of hours counseling, mentoring, speaking and teaching anyone who had a dream of financial freedom.
He praised God with every victory and asked God use him to help others. Fred pushed harder still, growing business all over the world. He found himself speaking to and motivating tens of thousands of eager businessmen and women worldwide. To his family, friends & business associates he truly lived up to the moniker "Big Fred".
Fred returned to his roots and purchased farmland to conserve, protect and preserve the outdoors he loved so much. Thankful for the success he found, Fred realized every dream, living a very full life. He was a talented and avid hunter and marksman. Fred and his son Freddy traveled the world to the most exotic places hunting. Fred attained the grueling grand slam (rams) and the big five (African safaris) to name a few. Like everything else he submersed himself in, he became the best.
As Fred grew in life and business, so did his need to help others. He has been a faithful philanthropist. If there was a cause he believed in, he supported it 100-fold. He has met and learned so much from prominent world leaders and humbly applied their wisdom to his life's work.
Through his drive and success Fred created the most amazing life for his greatest treasures; his wife and kids. He was a loving husband, doting father and proud grandfather or "Poppi" to his ten adoring grandchildren. They have wonderful memories of experiences very few are fortunate to have. Thankful for and humbled by their many blessings, his family was most thankful for the strong leader and provider they had in their one of a kind patriarch, "Big Fred" or "Papa Bear".
Fred will be missed greatly, but, like he once told a friend, "It's the quality of the life, not quantity of the life that matters most." Big Fred fit more quality into 64 short years than most could into 100.
"You will be missed, but we will see you again. Now you can talk face to face with your biggest mentor and inspiration, the Lord. Until we meet again we will be listening for your lessons, we can hear you getting our attention…"hello!?!"
All of our love,

Your Loving Family"
There will be viewings on Thursday, June 13 and Friday June 14 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM at the Jesse H. Geigle Funeral Home, 2100 Linglestown Rd. Harrisburg, PA.
Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, June 15 at 10:30 AM at the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 6150 Allentown Blvd. Harrisburg, with a viewing one hour prior.

On behalf of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF), we send our condolences. Fred was a conservation-minded landowner with a strong passion for wildlife. He stood behind his passion, and together with Linda, made a lasting donation to the RMEF for elk and other wildlife. We can't thank Fred enough for being such a strong supporter of wildlife and our hunting heritage. Out thoughts are with Linda and the entire family!

Dear Linda,
I just heard of Fred's passing. My wife Dawn and I were involved in the Amway/Quixtar business for many years in Alan Tokarski's group (you may not have heard, but Shari Tokarski recently passed away) and later working more directly with Jerry and Polly. We learned so much from you and Fred, and I still apply many of the lessons I learned in my current position in the automotive industry.
You and Fred always gave special consideration to the Orthodox Jewish groups (Dovid Helfgott was among my downlines, you may remember him), and we truly appreciated it. When Dawn and I went Platinum, Fred arranged for us to walk the stage on Saturday night at Free Enterprise because, due to our Sabbath, we could not walk during pin recognition.
We will truly miss Fred in our hearts, and we hope that you will find comfort in your family, friends, and faith.
All the best, Avi Goldstein ([email protected])

Linda and Family- I knew cousin Fred all of his life. One of the early memories involves Fred, Jerry and I at 5-7 years old heading over to bring the cows in at around 6:00 AM. All if us with wet grass up around our knees, shuffling along, half awake. We shared the work ethic that was a part of the life on the farm - the guys and girls were little men and women by the time they were 8-9 years old. Fred also tried to help me with my hunting "skills". On a deer hunting get together at the farm I missed a buck early the opening day of deer season. We got together in the woods for lunch that day - Fred tied some counseling - he said "no more warning shots" - next time "shoot to kill" - followed by a lot of laughter. Fred was an inspiration to all of us as we did our things - in any walk of life. Our business has done well involving Gayle and a couple of our sons - in part based on Fred's inspiration. May God bless you and comfort you and your entire family, Love, Tim and Gayle

Dear Linda and family. My heart has been burdened with the loss of Fred. I can't fathom what it has done to all of you. We don't know the reasons, but may God's love and strength be there to comfort you at this time. I will always treasure the times spent with the Harteis family. Mostly the wisdom that Fred shared with us and how he shared God's fundamentals to make us a better person. His legacy will live on in the many lives he has touched along the way. Thank you all for allowing us to enjoy his friendship! God Bless.

I went to CD with both Freddie and Anne Harteis, we never hung out, we weren't in the same clicques, I was one that kind of just existed at CD. Anyway I was looking at the obituaries the other day and happen to come across this one of your father. I just want you to know that I am so extremely sorry for your loss and I hope the Lord's Peace will comfort you all in your time of need. We are all sheep on this earth, and your dad has returned back to his shepherd. Praying prayers of hope and grace to you all.

Wow I am in shock..
I always remember Fred and Linda coming to the UK to help us build the dream in our Amway business and get an insight to what we can achieve.
He always had a larger than life character and I remember those events like yesterday.
If I'm saddened I can only imagine how the family must be feeling.
May God be your rock and comforter at this time.

Thank you Fred for everything.

Dear Linda and Family: It is with great sadness that I offer my most sincere condolences and sympathy for your tragic loss. Anyone who ever knew Fred was touched positively in some way and for many of us who learned many of life's spiritual and buisness lessons from him will never be able to repay our debt to him for changing our thinking and thus our lives and our families lives forever. He left his mark on this world not only in all of you, but in all of us and thus in generations to come. What a tribute to one of God's most special servants. You and the family will always be in all of our thoughts and prayers. Fred's impact on this world will live on in all of us and that truly is a testement to the power of God's love and mercy for all of us. God Bless all of you always. Thank You Fred for living the dream and passing it foward for all of us to reach for. We are all better people because of your dream.
