Sister Gabriel McCauley

MCCAULEY, Sister Gabriel, RSHM A Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary for 70 years, Sister Gabriel McCauley, RSHM died on Friday, November 23, 2012, at the age of 90, after a brief stay at Regina Residence in Orange. The youngest of thirteen children, she was born in Co. Down, N. Ireland on February 26, 1922. She entered the RSHM Congregation in Ferrybank, Ireland in 1941, and in 1946 she came to Tarrytown and then to California. She received a BA from Marymount College, an MA from Loyola University, both in English, and a Secondary School Credential. For 25 years Sister Gabriel taught in high schools, at Corvallis, Studio City, 1946 - 1954; Sacred Heart of Mary, Montebello, 1954 - 61; and Mother Butler Memorial, San Jose, 1961 - 71. She next embarked upon a new career which she loved, that of caring for others. She became a licensed vocational nurse, and for 40 years, lovingly cared for her RSHM Sisters in Assisted Living in Westchester, patients in Santa Monica, and family members in New Jersey. In her retirement she continued to minister to individuals who needed health care assistance. She was a woman of great compassion, kindness, and heart filled giving.
Sister Gabriel liked walking, exercise and an occasional ping pong game. This year she celebrated her 70th Jubilee as an RSHM, with many of her family present. She is predeceased by her parents, her six bothers and six sisters. She will be greatly missed by her RSHM Sisters, her many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, her Leavey Center Chapel friends, past students and the many friends she touched during her lifetime. Special thanks to all those who cared for her during the last month of her illness. Mass of the Resurrection will take place on Friday, November 30, 2012, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Anastasia Church, 7390 W. Manchester Ave., L.A., 90045. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 5835 W.
