GABRIEL "GABE"
On Wednesday, November 5, 2003, age 92 of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, formerly of Pittsburgh; husband of Elinor Brenner Rubin; brother of the late Hyman Rubin, Harry Rubin, Dr. Morris Rubin, Dr. Leslie Rubin and Pauline Martin; also survived by five nieces, one nephew and their children. Mr. Rubin was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and a veteran of the US Army having served during WWII. He pursued most of his business activities in Pittsburgh over many years. A pioneer in the "drive-in theatre" business, he owned and operated movie houses and "drive-in theatres" in the Pittsburgh area. He was the Managing Director of the new Nixon Theatre in Pittsburgh where he presented many long running Broadway shows and other stage entertainment for over thirty years. Mr. Rubin, a sports enthusiast, was one of the original franchise owners of the American Basketball Association. His team known as the Pittsburgh Pipers won the first Championship of the league in 1968. Family and friends will gather at the BURTON L. HIRSCH FUNERAL HOME, INC., 2704 Murray Avenue, Squirrel Hill (412-521-2600) on Sunday at 10:30am and then leave to attend an 11:30am Graveside Service at B'Nai Israel Cemetery, Penn Hills Twp. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
