Maria Madalena Reyna “Mapo”, 86, of Poteet passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loved ones on January 7, 2023. She was born on January 22, 1936 to Bernardo and Maria (Naranjo) Reyna. Maria was a hardworking woman that began in her early years as she worked in the strawberry fields; an employee of Chrysler for 20 years while she was living in Michigan. As she returned to Poteet she continued working in the fields for much of her life as well as delivering papers for the San Antonio Express, and later she became a homecare provider. Maria was a hard-working woman all her life. She was a loving woman that was a walking testament of her Christ Jesus. She was a dedicated parishioner of St. Philip Catholic Church; she took in and raised two children that became her own grandchildren at heart. She was giving, sacrificial, and kind. She was a happy woman, who was slow to anger and quick to forgive. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten as she touched so many lives in such a special way during her time here on earth.
Maria is preceded in death by her parents Bernardo Reyna and Maria N. Reyna; brothers Carmelo Reyna, Roberto Garcia, Joe Reyna, and Rauval Garcia.
She is survived by her brothers Amadeo Garcia Jr and wife Virginia of Pleasanton; sister Janie Guerra and husband Jacinto of Poteet; sister Soyla Carrasco of Poteet; sister Margarita Aguero and husband Ambrosio of Poteet; sister Alvira Gomez of New Hudson, Michigan; brother Ernesto Garcia and wife Betty of Plymouth, Michigan; and sister-in-law Terry Garcia of Poteet; Grandchildren by heart Dulce Portales and husband Jose; Arnold “Yito” Martinez and girlfriend Adriane; Great-Grandchildren by heart Amber and Raziel Portales and Abbygail Martinez. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Wednesday, January 11, 2023 from 8:00 am to 10:00 am followed immediately by a funeral mass at 10:00 am both at St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church-Poteet under the direction of Hurley Funeral Home-Pleasanton. Burial will be in Garcia Family Cemetery-Poteet.
