Gail Ann McLaughlin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 9 to May 11, 2023.
Gail Ann Jones McLaughlin died on May 1, 2023, when her second husband of four years repeatedly shot her in a horrific and senseless act of domestic violence.

Gail was a mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, best friend and confidant, niece, student, teacher, mentor, leader, caregiver, planner, warrior, social butterfly, and our own "Dancing Queen." She loved to celebrate birthdays, Halloween, and Christmas. She was vibrant, creative, curious, adventurous, and the life of the party. Gail had a heart of gold, she was fiercely loyal, and her favorite color was purple.

Gail was born January 8, 1965, in Brigham City, Utah, to Gary and Sylvia Jones, their third daughter, but their first with chestnut-colored hair and dimpled cheeks. She graduated from Davis High School in 1983 and enrolled in the University of Utah, where she made fast friends in the Phi Mu sorority and discovered she had a knack for numbers. After college, Gail married Shawn McLaughlin, worked at Smith's Food King, and rose quickly to become a manager in the accounting department. She moved on to successfully run her own business for 25 years while raising their children, Raegan and Nikolas, whom she loved dearly. Gail and Shawn divorced in 2012.

Gail married her second husband in late 2018. She recently enrolled at Salt Lake Community College and was working toward her Medical Transcription certificate, pulling straight A's in her courses as she planned a career that would give her independence. She was a black belt in karate, an avid bowler, and a cross-country traveler. She was a lifelong member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Roy, Utah, where she served as Vice President and was involved in organizing the annual Sylvia L. Jones golf tournament.

Gail was truly and deeply loved by her family and friends, including her parents (deceased); her two children, Raegan (Tarren) and Nik; her grandchildren, Kinley, Griffinn, Maverick, Keely, and Brighton, who knew her as "Besta" and looked forward each week to her sleepovers; her sisters, Susie (Dirk), Linda (Fran), and Laura (Rich); her brother, Jason (Meg); and her many nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, and cousins. She is also survived by her loyal companion and Rottweiler mix, Maya.

A service to celebrate Gail's life will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at 11:30 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 5560 South 2300 West, Roy, Utah. Friends may visit with family after the service.

Although Gail was making a plan to escape the control, intimidation, and isolation of an abusive relationship, it is too late for Gail, and our world is a darker place for it. Please hear our message: domestic violence can be physical abuse, it can be mental and emotional abuse, and it requires urgent action. If you are experiencing domestic violence, please seek help by calling the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233).

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Utah Coalition Against Domestic Violence or the Rescue Mission's Women Center. And please wear purple-the National color in the fight to end domestic violence that symbolizes strength and courage, and Gail's favorite color. Gail, you will be in our hearts forever.

Laura and Rich, we can't find words that would help take away the pain of losing your dear sister Gail. But we are praying that our Father in Heaven will comfort you and bless your lives. What a good idea to donate to the domestic violence coalition, so that someone else will be helped in the future.

Nik & Raegan,
Sorry just doesn't seem to cut it. Doesn't express the thoughts and emotions I'm feeling for you and your families but I am so very sorry. She was stolen from you. It's not right and it's not fair. I hope with time the edges smooth out and the bottom is a bit softer to land in as I know the hole cannot be filled. She was one of a kind.
Love you guys. Take care of each other and hug those babies tight. Love Aunt Jen.

I first met Gail in karate. I joined with my three girls the year I turned 40. She was an amazing teacher, so detailed and patient. She was part of the 'Cool Girl's' group, in my mind. I thought she and the other Black Belt Ladies where amazing. Then one day after karate Gail asked me to start running with her, so she could train for her 3rd degree Black Belt test. Just like that, poof we were friends. She had an amazing gift to include people and make them feel important to her. Mostly because I think she really truly cared. I'm going to miss her contagious laugh and easy smile and having her come to dinner with the "Karate Girls". I'll miss her hug and having her say "Hey baby, how are you?" She touched so many lives and she will be sorely missed!

I met Gail years ago through our Bunco group. She was the shining star of our little club. Gail had an infectious laugh that carried throughout our homes and would keep us smiling all night long. She truly brought joy with her wherever she went. Gail was the one who organized our yearly Bunco retreat to Park City (no small feat), and gathered donations for friends in need. She made many friends and touched so many lives in her short time here on Earth. She will be greatly missed.

Gail was a close friend to my mother and family, we met her from Karate. I always got excited when my mom would tell me that Gail would be visiting. Because we always had fun when our karate group got together, often to play games. You could always tell when Gail arrived because of her laugh, and to me she seemed to be able to smile and laugh all the time. When I´d say hi and give her a hug she´d say "Hey Baby!" The way she would say it made me feel happy. I always felt a good energy around her. I love her like family and I will miss her dearly. I hope she is able to rest peacefully.

I am so Thankful to God for allowing me to know & grow close to Gail, her Mom& Dad& her siblings. The loss of Gail to her family & friends is unimaginable. She was so bubbly & had such a "servants heart". There aren´t enough complimentary words to describe the love she had for her family, friends & her church. I know that I have been truly blessed to have had her in my life.

Rae & Nik- my heart breaks for you both. Sending love to you and your little families... Gail was a "bonus mom" to me growing up. So many fond memories of her, too many to list. She was so kind and had a heart of gold. Gail was charismatic and fun to be around. She is the reason I love bridge, country music, drive-in movies, and chili mac. I loved that she let me be the tag along friend for so many years! She was one of those lucky women who are beautiful both on the inside and out. Gail, you are so very loved and will be missed. May you find peace in heaven. Xoxo

While walking home from the bus one day Gail called my name, and asked me to wait while she caught up with me. She said, "Can I ask you a question?" I said yes. And she says, "Why do you always look like you are ready to bite someone's head off?" She smiled as she asked the question. It caught me by surprise and I told her I Didn't realize I looked like that. We walked up Waterfall Way together continuing conversation. She was the person that brought the fact that I have 'resting angry face' to my attention, and I still remember her nearly 50 years later. My sincere condolences to all of you for this devastating loss.

Dear Gail, I met you in person only once and I must have been a stranger to you. But you greeted me with a hug, like an old friend, just like your Mom used to greet me.

You were no stranger to me. I had seen your picture on Facebook and so I knew you were the author of a letter to our church family that had very much impressed me.

We need good Christian people like you and I am confused and sad that you are gone now.

Dear father in heaven, why?

Your kingdom come!

I treasured my friendship with Gail. I loved every moment I was able to spend with her. From going to Raegan´s games at Utah State, to playing cards with Gail and momma Jones (Sylvia), to dinners with Gail and Jilyn among the many other fun things we did. It was always fun to be with Gail. She was a ray of sunshine like no other. She was a blessing in my life and I will deeply miss her. We always ended our times together with "Love You!" My deepest heartfelt sympathy to Gail´s family and friends.

I thought I'd already left a message but don't see it. If this is a repeat I apologize. I'm quite a few years older than Gail was & I do have my senior moments. About Gail: she was a significant part of so many lives. To me she was first a neighbor & casual acquaintance. I met her at my church doing a "Super Saturday Craft Class". Then we became painting partners in a class we took together. She invited me to a function at her church. We visited in one another's homes. When I got courageous enough to sign up and become a part of Karate Shin-Toshi, who was there but Gail taking karate with her son Nik. In Karate Classes we learned together, partnered together, taught together and much more. Over my years there, Gail was a sparring partner, walking buddy, mentor, fellow judge, timekeeper & Sensi. She truly was every positive adjective I can think of. Her circle of friends was very large & so was her love & enthusiasm for life. She was as real & genuine as they come. To say she will be missed by all who knew her is an understatement at best. She left a bit of herself on every life she touched. I know she is having a great reunion with her beloved parents. Heaven's gain and our loss until we meet again. Love and prayers to the many who are mourning the loss of such a bright light in the world. Love, Valorie Ivers

Reagan, Nik, and Gail´s family members. Our deepest most heartfelt condolences to you and your family. Gail was such a beautiful and wonderful person, following in her mother´s footsteps of kindness and also creating her own path of love and kindness. We are heartbroken and angry over the senseless and tragic act against Gail and your family. We know without a doubt that she is at home, at peace and in a MUCH better place, but that doesn´t make it any less devastating or painful. I pray the many happy and beautiful memories that you have of your mom, will keep her in your hearts until y´all meet again. All of our love to y´all. In our hearts and prayers.

We met Gail when we joined Our Saviors Lutheran Church. She sat behind us in church and had a beautiful singing voice! She always had a smile! She helped me count money once a month-I resigned because I didn´t feel it was my forte. She was always patient with me. This year she was my church secret sister and I was enjoying getting things for her. Gail you will be missed and my heart just goes out to the family! God Bless all of you!

Gail was one of my favorite dance moms. Anytime she walked in the room or I saw her. I lit up with joy and love, because that is what she radiated. She was so kind and had the biggest heart. I am grateful to have met her. And may her soul be at peace and blessed

I know first hand that Gail was many things to many people. To me she was first a neighbor, then a friend, a painting class partner and as we each progressed in many many shared karate classes & events
and became Sensi in KARATE SHIN_TOSHI she and I were sparing partners, walking buddies, timers & scorers at tournaments as well as Belt Tests. She helped support & mentor me as I progressed on my journey in Karate. There are not enough positive words to describe Gail. She simply did not have a mean bone in her body. My heart, sympathy & prayers go out to her children whom I knew well, her grandchildren & countless friends and associates. I know she is welcomed with open arms into the next life. Her presence will be forever missed, her memory forever cherished. Goodbye my dear frien Gail. Love, Val

My first thoughts upon hearing the tragic violent departure of this bright smiling light we know as Gail, was "this world has lost a bright light...and it feels very darkened. I want to express my love for Gail´s family, and strive to hold more light within; in honor of my beloved Niece and her exemplary siblings and children/grandchildren. There will be a joyful reunion, when we also leave this world.
