Suddenly in hospital surrounded by her family on Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at the age of 78. Beloved wife of Rodrigue "Rod". Much loved mother of Guy (Jennifer Chamberlain),
Steve (Lise), Lorraine Barbeau (Mike), Rod (Anne), Marc (Cathy), Adrienne (Bill Davis). Cherished Mamère/Nanny to Mathieu (Patricia Kmiec), Patrick, Kristy Leigh, Jenna, Kendra, Max and Ben. Dear sister of Valerie Carbonette (Don), and the late Jack. Predeceased by her parents Patrick Barrie and Eva Casey. Family and friends may pay their respects at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home 1411 Hunt Club Rd. at Albion Rd. on Tuesday from 2- 4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Holy Cross Church, 685 Walkley Rd. Interment Capital Memorial Gardens. In memoriam donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.

Many years ago a very uncertain 10 year old girl walked into a very large new family. Auntie Gail offered welcoming smiles, reassuring hugs, and a gentleness in her acceptance of me into the family. Auntie Gail's warmth and quiet actions taught me a valuable lesson that simple genuine gestures of acceptance can make a positive difference in someone's life. Having babysat me as a wee one my Aunt Gail thought it was over but even with 5 kids of her own, Gail and Rod agreed to take in another lost soul many years later on Kingston St. We have lost a patient,caring woman with a huge heart but I know where you are right now and you totally deserve those angel wings.

Leonard and I are so sorry about the loss of Gail. We have been remembering all the fun times of our younger days. Rod - you have been so good to her. We will keep all of you in our prayers.
I myself have known Gail for nearly 70 years, We went to elementary school together and even worked together. Her dad used to take the two of us to the old Imperial Theatre on Bank Street every Friday night. If by chance, there was a young couple in front of us and the young man happened to put his arm around his date, Mr. Barrie would tap him on the shoulder and say 'I have two young girls here, please don't do that'. Gail and I would crouch down in our seats, hoping no one would recognize us.
Gail and I met Rod and Leonard at the same time and when they would visit, her mom would turn back the clock so her dad wouldn't know what time it was.
I will miss our phone chats. It seems like just yesterday that we did these things and we would laugh and say how did we get to be two old ladies so quickly.
Rest in Peace Gail until we meet again.
