I remember the hours Garnet and I spent playing road / ball hockey on the driveway, using the hedge row behind the net to catch anything that travelled wide. At first, Garnet just wore that one important piece of equipment and I could shoot at him from close range, however, as we got older, he began wearing all of his goaltending gear and he made me move back as far as I could before taking the shot.
I also remember catching rides to hockey practices and games in Dunnville with Garnet and his mom. It was a very slow and dependable way of getting to the rink, however, Garnet and I would often have to rush to get ready, even though his mom left their place, at least, an hour ahead of time.
This habit of dressing quickly for hockey, continued throughout my years on the ice. I often watched the game before us, then went to the dressing room, often the last to get started, but the first to finish. I know I could totally dress in under 5 minutes.
If it weren't for Garnet and his mom, I would have missed a lot of my hockey games and practices. My parents were often busy with my sister and her dancing. Garnet and I both loved hockey, a lot.
The funniest thing I remember was when, during the Blizzard of 77, I used our snowmobile and sleigh to take Garnet and his dad to another acreage they owned. We were travelling on the snow...parallel to the power lines, believe it or not..that's how deep the snow was, with Garnet on the back of the snowmobile with me and his dad in the sleigh. All of a sudden, we hit a void where there was absolutely no snow and dropped several feet to the bottom. I looked back and his dad had been thrown out of the sleigh, to the ground, with cat and dog food all over him and Garnet was laughing so hard, I thought for sure his dad would explode, but he didn't, his dad just calmly brushed himself off and picked up the cat and dog food.
I also remember my parents getting called over to the Wilson's, in the middle of the night, to help Garnet and his mom pull the odd calf during calving season. My dad would often remark on how strong and tough Garnet's mother was for her age.
I hope these stories provide some insight as to what Garnet was like in his teens. He was a great friend and his parents were great neighbors. Garnet will be missed by many, myself included. Wishing the best, for all members of Garnet's family, moving forward.
