Garret Hill Obituary

Garret Hill August 27, 2002 – April 21, 2024

Garret was born a Pittsburgh Steelers fan thanks to his dad, and his love for the Steelers never wavered. He enjoyed watching the games with his family while always passionately rooting on the black & yellow.

Garret grew up in Dublin, CA. He loved playing sports and was a natural born athlete with tremendous ability that spanned many sports. He excelled in soccer, baseball, basketball, and football. He attended Valley Christian School in Dublin from Pre-K through 8th grade consistently making the honor roll, and he made many lifelong friends. He was chosen by his classmates to lay the wreath at The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington D.C. on his 8th grade trip. What an honor since he loved his country and our military! He then moved to Pleasanton, CA and attended Foothill High School where he made many more friends and enjoyed campus life very much.

He played football and JV basketball his first year of high school. Starting sophomore year, he put all his focus into his passionate love of basketball. He played varsity basketball his sophomore and junior year, making scholar athlete every year. He was an excellent shooting guard, and it would not be uncommon for Garret to make five to six 3-point shots in a single game. He excelled as a defensive player and had great court awareness, always getting his teammates involved. He demonstrated great leadership skills on all his sports teams ever since he was a young boy.

Garret really loved many genres of music but particularly the 60s and 70s. He loved all the great lyrics and melodies that the older music embraced, and he particularly enjoyed the music of Motown. He often played DJ in the car for the family. He also loved to go on family vacations with Maui being his favorite place to visit. Garret was a huge dog lover, and his dogs were never far from him.

He had a great sense of humor and loved comedy. He was incredibly thoughtful of others and always looked out for the underdog. He was extremely smart and intuitive, a great listener and had a good command of many different topics. When Garret was very young, his grandpa often said that Garret was an old soul, and he sure was. He was often teaching us what he learned from the Bible and how it applied to our lives. From an early age, Garret was not shy in talking about his faith. He shared it with people who were struggling and wanted to learn more about God. He even brought more than a handful of people to know Him.

Although Garret is no longer with us physically, we know he is still all around us, and we cannot wait until we see him again. He is so dearly missed by his parents, Scott and Lisa, his sisters, Allie and Natalie, his "brothers," Angelo, Elliot and Eric, and many other relatives and friends. He is predeceased by his grandpa Ron, grandma Evy, grandma Dianne, great grandma Olivia, and great grandma Margie.

Until we see you again, G, we love you so much!

Gary entering this new year without you has been challenging. Thank God for his promise that we will be together again one day. I truly cannot wait for our reunion little brother. I love writing to you, I love talking to people about you, that´ll never change. I will never not tell people how amazing MY brother was & share how impactful your journey will forever remain to be to me on my journey. I miss you more than life & I love you even more. Today was a good day & it made me smile knowing you were next to me experiencing it with me & seeing me smile & enjoy the present moment with a new friend. You sent me the photo I attached years ago and said it was captioned something along the lines of "reunion in heaven" Man I am going to run so fast I´ll be flying when I see your face again. Thinking of our first eternal hug brings tears to my eyes. I love you I love you I love you. Talk to ya soon baby G

You made me a big sister, G. I can´t put into words the ache that has found a home in my heart since the night you went to be with Jesus, "I miss you" just doesn´t cut it. I miss laughing with you and there´s nothing I wouldn´t give to go on one of our drives with some oldies playing in the background right about now. Even though I´m your big sister I´ve always looked up to your strength, and with each passing day I find myself leaning deeper into the lessons you left behind. Grandpa was right, you´ve always been an old soul, ever since you were a little boy. You lived life so fully, so intentionally and so faithfully. Although you are no longer physically here, I will never stop learning from you. I see you everywhere and in everything. You are a one of one. Your courage, resilience, and love for your family and friends will continue to live on and will carry us through this heartache. I will walk this road and face whatever comes my way with my head held high, because I am your sister, and that gives me strength. I will cherish our friendship and the memories we made for the rest of my life. Until I´m with you on the other side of eternity baby brother, I´ll be missing you. I love you. I was Garrett´s 6th and 7th grade science and Bible teacher. Garrett was a wonderful young man who made a lasting impression upon me and all who knew him. He was unfailingly respectful and polite, a hard worker, always cheerful, a great student, a genuinely Godly young man who was a leader and a good friend to his fellow students. It was rare to see Garrett without a basketball in his hand and a smile on his face. Though his great potential was cut short, his impact was impressive on his peers and all who knew him. He packed so much into his brief life, and I am a better person for having known him.

I remember Garret as a happy kid shooting baskets in front of his house and wrestling with his sister in his bedroom. He was the kind of big brother anyone any sibling would want. Garret always greeted me with a smile and polite "Hi Jim". He is one of the most respectful and polite kids you will ever meet. There was a special time when we flew down to LA with Rod Woodson of the Pittsburgh Steelers to watch Rod on the NFL Network. I´ll never forget the look in Garrett´s eyes when we were in Rod´s office and Rod grabbed a jersey signed it and tossed it to Garret. It was a special day. My memories of Garret are strong and will last forever.

I love how Garret stood his ground when talking about his beloved Steelers! He knew scores, players and legends.
