Gary Bogart Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 20, 2018.
Gary L. Bogart, a resident of St. Pete Beach, Florida, died on June 19, 2018, after a long illness. The funeral will be at the Cathedral Church of St. Peter, 140 4th Street North, St. Petersburg, FL, on Saturday, July 14 at 2 p.m.

Gary's ashes will be interred at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, New York City, at a later date.

Gary was born in Alton, Illinois, on September 11, 1942, to Joseph and Bernice Bogart. He was a graduate of Alton High School and Northwestern University. He held a master's degree in library science from the University of Illinois and a master's degree in English from Southern Illinois University.

After two years as a teacher in Illinois, Gary moved to New York City in 1969. He was an editor at the H.W. Wilson Company for many years. He married Cathy Rentschler, also an editor at the H.W. Wilson Company, in 1975. After leaving the Wilson Co., Gary held administrative positions at New York Public Library. He moved to Florida in 2000 to accept a position as Assistant Director of Pinellas Park Public Library. He retired in 2010.

Gary was a long-time member of Christ and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in New York City and the Cathedral Church of St. Peter in St. Petersburg, FL.

In retirement, Gary was active in the Academy of Senior Professionals at Eckerd College (ASPEC). He and Cathy enjoyed return visits to New York, where they have a second home. Gary's interests included opera, theater, museums and cooking.

Gary is survived by his wife of 42 years, Cathy Rentschler, his brother J. Ronald Bogart (Bloomington, IL), brother-in-law Bob (Nancy) Rentschler of Birmingham, AL, nieces Luanne Bogart (Pekin, IL), Stacy Hembree (Normal, IL), Erika Harvell (Birmingham, AL) and Britt Rentschler (Los Angeles, CA), and several cousins, including Dennis Milford (Boston, MA), who often visited to attend the opera with Gary in New York.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Cathedral Church of St. Peter, 140 4th St. North, St. Petersburg, FL 33701; ASPEC Annual Scholarship Fund (make check to Eckerd College & note fund name on memo line; send to Eckerd College, Attn. Cathy, was surfing the internet trying to find an email address for you or Gary because I started reading a recent well-received book set in Alton, Illinois (scene of Gary's teaching time and coincidental with Laurel Cooley's being a young student there in the pre-H.W.Wilson years.) Wanted to let him know about the book. Instead found the obituary. Cathy, Gary was such a unique person and know this must have been a great loss. The world is a little less. Young Britney's reference to Gary's support, humor and dependable spirit, was much to the point. Thinking of you and hoping you are still occasionally checking in to this obituary page.

I have fond memories of us as kids, going to Main St. Methodist Church, Aunt Mayme's at Christmas time, and Uncle Mel and all the kids playing "up table up". Rest in Peace cousin. Gayvohn Robertson Bayley
