Gary Lynn Cannon was born on January 14, 1951 in Wilson, OK, the son of Jimmy Cannon and Betty (Tate) Cannon. He passed from this life on January 26, 2023 in Hugo, OK at the age of 72. Gary married Janet (Seale) Cannon on October 11, 1974 in Walled Lake, Michigan. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jimmy and Betty Cannon; and his brother, Dennis Cannon.
Gary was the ultimate sportsman. He loved football, hunting, and fishing. It was his life. Gary also enjoyed a good gospel singing and preaching, and didn’t mind traveling hours for it. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren, and he was so proud of them all. Above all, Gary was a Christian, “and nothing else matters.”
Gary is survived by his wife, Janet Cannon of Hugo, OK; son, Blake Cannon and wife Carrie of Skiatook , OK; daughters, Linda Byrd and husband Leighton of Hugo, OK, and Monica Moffitt and husband John of Hugo, OK; grandchildren, Addison Byrd, Peyton Byrd, Ashia Jordan, Jaxon Moffitt, Presley Moffitt, Jacob Cannon, Elijah Cannon, and Aubrey Cannon; special family friend, Dr. Mike Irvin; along with a host of other relatives and friends.

Like Clyde Gates, I got to know Gary as an instructor with the Southwestern Division VA training cadre. It's been said that the best educators and park rangers (not at all dissimilar groups) carry in their DNA the enabling genes for service and compassion. I've known few who exhibited both more strongly than did Gary. The world need more like him.

Gary was a great friend, classmate, and teammate. He was one of my best friends in school. However, he was also a tremendous prankster. He once caught a sack of sparrows and snuck them in the Thompson Movie Theater in Healdton. It was Halloween and a scary movie was showing. He waited to the scariest scene was on and released them in the theater. The projector made them look like bats and vampires. Everyone ran out hurriedly. It was determined he was the guilty one because he was the only one laughing. Debbie and I and the class of 69 will miss him and his great stories at the reunion. Rest in Peace my great friend.

Gary was such a good leader & teacher of so many young park rangers with the Corps of Engineers. Great man & public servant who made a positive difference for those he encountered in life, his community & for the Nation. Blessed to have worked with Gary & shared a little bit of life with him.

I had the privilege of getting to know Gary over several years as we taught citation authority school for the Southwestern Division of the Corps of Engineers. He would tell stories of when he was a ranger and of some of his coworkers that were as fascinating as they were funny! He was always congenial, reasonable, and caring - and he loved God, his family, job and duties. He was an example that I still strive to emulate. I was blessed by knowing him!

I worked with Gary at the Tulsa Dist Office and remember him well. He always let his light shine brightly for his Lord and he actively put feet to his faith. My prayers go out to you as you celebrate his life and adjust to life without him here on earth. This time is fleeting but eternity is forever.
