Gary Confer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 15 to Mar. 16, 2023.
Gary Confer, beloved brother, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on January 15, 2023. He is survived by his brothers, Buddy and Doug Confer; sons, Matt (Megan) and Greg (Brittany) Confer; stepchildren, Alex, Doug, and Matt (Kristen) Rossino; grandchildren, Ethan & Ava Confer, Olivia & Ryder Moore, and Nico Rossino; and partner of the past 3 years, Judy Betts. He is predeceased by his parents, Doris & Charles Confer; sister, Dawn Confer; and late-wife, Lori Keogh Confer.

Gary was born in Long Island, NY, and moved with his mother and siblings to Long Beach, CA, at a young age. Gary excelled at academics and was a 3-sport athlete graduating at the top of his class with honors from Estancia High School. He then went on to receive his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Harvard University where he also played on the Harvard football team. His next step was on to medical school at UC Irvine where he achieved his Doctor of Medicine before beginning his career as a radiologist, marrying, and becoming a proud father. During his 25+ years as a radiologist, Gary held various leadership positions and was known for going above and beyond in his work. Although he was a dedicated worker, his main priority was his boys. He loved spending as much time with them as he could by volunteering as their little league coach and always taking them out to throw a ball around. Gary later retired to Austin, TX, and enjoyed being on the water in his boat, playing music, writing, and getting to spend time with his grandkids.

Gary was one of a kind with the most compassionate heart and contagious laugh. He was taken from us too soon and to say that he will be greatly missed is certainly an understatement.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation to the Central Texas Food Bank in Gary's name.

Gary was one of the best of our high school graduating class of 1976. Gary was as accomplished as he was kind, talented and hard working. Our deepest heartfelt condolences to the Confer family.

Gary and I were HS friends and teammates. He was a special guy. I have many fond memories of Gary, including an epic spring break road trip with three others to Yosemite NP our senior year. He went off to college as I did but we reunited about 20 years ago. Recently, I had a feeling something was wrong as he had not replied to a Christmas text or a recent text. I last spoke with him in June 2022 after a fun visit with him in Austin. We met earlier while he was on a road trip with a friend, sometime in 2018 or 2019. We shared memories and good laughs. While I knew he had a health issue, I was shocked to read his obituary. I am deeply sorry I wasn´t aware of his passing until now. I offer my heartfelt condolences to his family, relatives, and siblings. While he may rest in peace, I will never forget about him. Attached is a photo of me (Stuart Van Horn) on the right and Gary´s HS football teammate Dan Collins. We just had lunch three days ago in Huntington Beach and fondly recalled fun days with Gary.

Gary and I were married for 20 years and friends for the next 20. In those years he was unwavering in his love, support and pride in his two sons. Matt and Greg are the legacy that will live on.
He is gone too soon, especially since he´d finally met the perfect soul mate in Judy!
Grief is the price we pay for love. A high price for sure but knowing him made it worth it. Love never dies.

Gary and I were married for 20 years and friends for the past 20 years. In all that time he was unwavering in his love and support of his boys. Matt and Greg are the legacy that will live on. His pride in them was boundless. Grief is the price we pay for love. A huge price but well worth the time shared. Love never dies.

Gary was the best father-in-law that anyone could ask for. He was always looking out for Matt, me, and the kids. And he was also concerned about our new house, as if it was his own. He was the one that we would call first if we needed help or had a question. I'm so sorry that Ethan and Ava didn't get more time with their grandpa. There is so much that I hoped they would learn from him and memories that I hoped they would share together. There is a huge hole in our lives without Gary and we miss him daily.
