Gary England, the popular Oklahoma-based meteorologist who brought Doppler radar and early tornado warnings to the mainstream, died June 10, 2025, at the age of 85.
Enterprise Electronics Corporation developed the first Doppler weather radar system for commercial use, but it was England who, in 1982, first took to the air and used the system to provide viewers with an early warning about an incoming tornado. Radar had been used to track tornadoes before – a decade prior, England himself cut into TV programming to warn of an existing tornado outside Norman, Oklahoma using a then-new system designed for television – but providing early warnings before a tornado had even appeared was groundbreaking. It has since become commonplace, likely saving countless lives in the process.
England also helped create First Warning and Storm Tracker, two systems designed to more easily pinpoint and display when and where severe weather will hit. His work made him well-known enough that he had a cameo in the 1996 film "Twister." He is also the author of "Weathering the Storm: Tornadoes, Television, and Turmoil," a 1997 account of his career to that point.
Tributes poured in to social media from colleagues, others in the field, and viewers alike. "Everyone in Oklahoma - or the country knew Gary as a weather forecasting legend! I had the pleasure of working with him for several years. Oklahoma will miss you Gary!" wrote KWTV anchor Jennifer K Pierce, while KSWO anchor Kyle Weatherly called him "the unquestioned G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time) of Oklahoma meteorologists. An absolute legend that meant as much to his profession and this state as anyone ever has."

I'm able to write this now Gary was a true Oklahoman and a big heart . He will be forever part of our family and in my heart.
I remember when I was about 7 years old and I had an accident at school and my parents was rushing me to the hospital and my dad blow a tire and Gary stopped to make sure everything was ok and he rushed us to children hospital so I can get my hand and arm stitched up . After that he called Ok highway patrol for our car and had it taken to otscos off of 29th and Newcastle.
We could not thank him enough for what he did that day . We had only been in Oklahoma for a few months

In the early 70's had farm at NE 122nd & Kelly for some time a white car would fly by south on Kelly never could get a good look at or driver as it was going so fast, then one day the car came to a screeching stop as the smoke from the tires cleared a clean cut little guy opened the door with a 9 on it & walked to the front of the car & led the dairy cow that he almost hit out of the road waved at me & continued on his way, over the yrs saw him many more times there he would wave but he sped no more. Cows & cars as I were grateful.....Speed on Gary.

My deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. England. I moved to Oklahoma right after I discharged from the Air Force in 1982 during springtime. I had only been here a few days when the sirens went off. I turned on the TV and there was Mr. England telling me where the storm was at and where it was heading. From that moment on, he was the only weather forecaster (Meteorologist) I would watch or listen to when he would broadcast on the radio to compensate for power outages. He saved tens of thousands of lives over his lifetime but most significantly on May 3, 1999. Mr. England said, "If you are not underground you won't survive" or something like that. People were in their cars and he was directing them on where to drive to stay out of the path. I know several people that had their homes wiped off and destroyed that heeded his warning and survived because they were in their cars being guided by him out of the main path of the massive tornado. He was a hero to many of us and I am saddened by his loss. May God bless him in eternal life and bless and comfort his loved ones. Thank you Gary for your service to the people of Oklahoma.

My wife and i taught our children from a very young age that if we were at work and severe weather developed to tune in to channel 9 and listen to Gary and to follow his instructions until we got home because he would keep them safe, Gary could calmly talk to the children without causing fear,.....many times I've heard Gary referred to as the weather god.....and that he was, he kept many people safe over the yrs....Gary's shoe's will be hard for anyone to fill

I'll never forget Gary's words May 3rd 1999 during the F5 tornado that went through Moore Oklahoma. He stated "seek shelter underground." We spent the next 3 weeks cleaning up our business that was hit on Bryant and i-240. Gary's words changed my life it made me more keenly aware of severe weather. He will forever be a part of our family. We trusted him and he kept us safe. He will be remembered in our hearts and mind as a great Oklahoman. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, his wife, his daughter and we pray that he rest peacefully in God's hands.

Gary England wasn´t just a meteorologist, he was the calm in the storm, the voice we trusted when the skies turned dark. For 41 years on Channel 9, he guided us through tornadoes, hail, and fear, always with steady hands and a plainspoken heart.
Rest easy, Gary.
The radar still hums, but the voice we all counted on now belongs to the sky.
You´ll always be part of Oklahoma´s story.
Thank you for keeping watch.

As a CT Yankee transplant dropped out on the Oklahoma prairie with no knowledge whatsoever of what to do/not do during tornadoes, #GaryEngland was my sanity. His calm voice & demeanor taught me to be prepared & to stay calm throughout the storms, all of which enabled me to keep my children safe. Afterall, he was speaking directly to me, to each and every one of us. He was a Godsend to all who heard his voice, "Stay with TV9, we'll keep you advised." And we did. Thank you, Gary, and rest in peace.
