Dr. Gary James Fortune, 65, of St. Louis, Missouri, passed away on July 20, 2023. He was born on November 4, 1957, in St. Louis to the late James I. Fortune and Anna Marie Fortune.

Dr. Fortune proudly served as a US Army Major, Flight Surgeon, and Occupational Medicine Physician during his military career. His dedication and commitment to serving his country earned him the Meritorious Service Medal as well as the respect of his colleagues and superiors.

A distinguished physician and epidemiologist, Dr. Fortune was recognized as the MOAA Physician of the Year for his outstanding contributions to the medical field. He graduated from Affton High School and furthered his education at Truman University, Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.

Outside of his professional life, Dr. Fortune found joy in reading, studying history, fishing, enjoying music, and passionately supporting St. Louis sports teams. His diverse interests reflected his intellectual curiosity and love for his community.

Dr. Fortune is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Bond Fortune, his children Evan, Conor, and Haley Fortune, his mother Anna Marie Fortune, and his sisters Lynn Fortune Schwartz and Joy Fortune Voss. He is preceded in death by his father, James I. Fortune, his aunt Mary Morice Fey, and his uncle Kenneth Fey and grandparents Austin and Alvena Morice.

Dr. Gary James Fortune will be remembered for his dedication to his patients, his country, and his family. His legacy of service and compassion will continue to inspire all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Interment with Military Honors to Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St Louis, Missouri, was held for Major Gary James Fortune on December 27, 2023.
