Gary Edison Howard, 92, passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 21, 2024, in
Rocklin, California, with his beloved wife of 67 years by his side. Born on April 2, 1932, in Kenmore, New York, Gary's life was a testament to perseverance, dedication, and love for family and education.
From humble beginnings in a small suburb of New York, Gary charted a remarkable journey that would touch countless lives. As a young man, he served his country with honor as a corporal in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952, stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Upon returning home, he pursued higher education with determination-despite early academic struggles that nearly derailed his college career. Refusing to give up, Gary turned things around and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts from Michigan State University and later a Doctorate in Education (Ed.D.) from San Francisco State University.
Gary began his professional life as a teacher and steadily rose through the ranks of academia to become a college dean-a role in which he truly found his calling. A passionate advocate for vocational education, he was instrumental in securing substantial grant funding for the Peralta College District. His efforts helped expand opportunities for countless students seeking practical career paths. Drawing on his own experiences as a once-struggling student, Gary authored the book *Help Your Kids Get Better Grades*, reflecting his lifelong commitment to helping others succeed academically.
Beyond the classroom and administrative offices, Gary was known for his warmth, humor, and unwavering support for those around him. He was a devoted husband to Judith Lee Howard (née Powers), with whom he built a loving home filled with laughter and shared adventures. Together they raised two sons: Scott Howard (Anmarie) and Kenneth Howard (Dione). Gary was affectionately known as "Grandpa Gary" to five grandchildren-Gary Howard, Heather Howard, Colton DeMarr, Carley Vanyi (Zach), and Cade DeMarr-and two great-grandchildren, Noelani Vanyi and Kalea Vanyi.
Gary's zest for life extended well beyond his professional achievements. An avid ice hockey player since youth, he continued playing into his 60s and even competed in the Senior Olympics. He cherished time spent outdoors and especially loved camping trips with family at their treasured Bucks Lake. His dedicated support of Judie's passion for dog training led them to travel to many destinations over the years while always creating new memories together. Judie was the love of his life, and he never left her side.
Those who knew Gary remember him as kind-hearted and cheerful-a man who could light up any room with a joke or story. He was always ready to lend a hand or offer guidance to anyone in need. His legacy is one of resilience, loyalty, and deep familial love. Though an only child with no surviving extended family, Gary built an enduring network of friends and loved ones who will carry forward the lessons he taught through example.
Gary Edison Howard lived a life fully guided by purpose, enriched by love, and grounded in service to others. May his memory bring comfort to all who had the privilege of knowing him. A Celebration of Life will be held on June 21, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 03:00 PM at Orchard Creek Lodge in Lincoln, CA
