Gary N. Johnson

Hardeeville SC - It is with profound sadness that we announce Gary N. Johnson age 70 passed away on September 17, 2023 surrounded by his loving family following a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Gary was born in Attleboro, Massachusetts to Roger and Adele (Allard) Johnson. He graduated from Attleboro High School in 1972 and the United States Air Force in 1976. Based in Illinois, he returned to Attleboro to marry his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Ellen (Frigon) Johnson in 1977 and they embarked on creating a life together. The United States Air Force would take them to Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, DC. It is there that Gary and Ellen welcomed their first child, Amy. Following his honorable discharge, the young Johnson family chose beautiful Cape Cod to make their home and welcome their son, Nicholas, not long after arriving. Gary was a career firefighter and EMT, working first at Otis Air Force Base and then at the Centerville/Osterville/Marstons Mills Fire Department for 28 years before retiring in 2015. His dedication to protect his community is certainly admirable, and his friendship to so many remarkable, but it was his unwavering love and devotion to his family, his quick wit and easy laugh that will be forever missed. Gary was so happy to spend time with his son, Nick, at Fenway Park watching a Red Sox game, cheering on the Patriots with Ellen, and beamed with pride while attending his grandsons' football and baseball games.

Gary was predeceased by his parents, Roger and Adele Johnson, and his in-laws, Frederick and Gertrude Frigon. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Ellen (Frigon) Johnson, his devoted and loving children, daughter Amy (Johnson) Murphy and husband, Patrick Murphy of Franklin; his son, Nicholas Johnson and wife Danielle Johnson of Sandwich. He leaves behind his grandchildren that he loved beyond measure, Jack Murphy, Matthew Murphy, Drew Murphy, Chase Johnson, and Kamryn Rader. He leaves behind sister in law, Janice (Frigon) Farrell, her husband Ray Farrell and their sons Richard Farrell and Gregory Farrell, and sister in law Tracey (Frigon) Scott in addition to cousins, his brothers of COMM Fire Department, his colleagues at Five Star Bus Company, and countless friends.

The family wishes to thank Tim and Carol Collins, life-long friends, for their love and support during this most difficult time.

We are bringing Gary home to Cape Cod to honor his life. Family and friends are invited to attend the Burial with military honors on Friday, October 20 at 10:15 am at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, Massachusetts. A celebration of Gary's life will be held at the Wequaquet Lake Yacht Club, 150 Annable Point Road, Centerville, Massachusetts on Saturday, October 21 12:00 pm- 4:00pm for family and friends.
