Gary Jost Obituary

Visit the Legacy Remembers website to view the full obituary.
Jost, Gary D., MD took his final breath early Sunday morning, June 28, 2015, as the sun rose across his Lake Lab home surrounded by his beloved family. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 13 years, Janet Cusick Jost; sons James (Hillary) Jost of Wichita and Jonathan (Hannah) Jost of Nashville, TN; and granddaughters Isabella Grace, Harper Anne, and Avery Rae. Gary grew up in Reedley, California as the son of tree-fruit farmers. He learned at a very early age the value of hard work and how to drive a tractor and stick shift Jeep, skills that served him well at his Lake Lab home. Gary studied medicine at The University of Kansas School of Medicine and became one of Wichita's most gifted, compassionate surgeons. His career spanned three decades and included private general surgery practice (1982-1995) followed by practice at Wichita Surgical Specialists (1985-2014) and Vein Care Specialists (2007-2014). His most notable contribution to medicine was his dedication to the care of children and adults with burn injuries in the Via Christi Regional Burn Center and the wonderful teams he worked with for over 28 years. Dr. Jost was a mentor and always encouraged students, residents, nurses and other staff to be the best they could be. During his years of practice, Dr. Jost saved many lives, improved the quality of life for countless patients, and provided comfort for those in time of loss, helping their loved ones to die with as much comfort and dignity as possible. Among family and friends, Gary will be remembered as a great cook and host to many gatherings that were not complete without Gary's signature margaritas, tumbleweeds, and homemade ice cream. Gary was a loyal Wichita State Men's Basketball fan and season ticket holder since 1973. Gary and son, James, were honored to spend the day with Coach Gregg Marshall and the team this past season, one of the highlights of his life. Gary was diagnosed with inoperable gallbladder cancer in September 2014 and was forced into immediate retirement. In his retirement letter Gary wrote: "I would like to remind you that life is uncertain and may be cut short at any time. Take time to care for yourself and spend time with the people (and pets) who matter to you. Cherish every day you have. Rejoice at beautiful sunrises, gorgeous sunsets, and all rainbows. Howl at the moon if the mood strikes you. Make peace with yourself and others." These are truly words for all to live by. A private memorial service for family will be held on Tuesday, June 30 with a celebration of life to follow at a later date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), Central States or Burn Trauma Care Education c/o Via Christi Foundation. The Jost family wishes to extend their gratitude to Lamont Bloom, MD and Rivercross Hospice for the excellent care and loving support during Gary's end-of-life journey. In carrying on the Cusick-Jost tradition, friends and family are invited to howl at the full moon on Thursday, July 2 as a tribute to our beloved husband, father, papa and dear friend, Gary Jost. Enjoyed working with Dr Jost, He was dedicated to his patients and was a model of professionalism.

My prayers go out to the family and friends of Dr Jost. May God comfort you during this difficult time. In the summer of 1993, my son was in an accident with fire and gasoline which he had burns of 2nd and 3rd degree 40% of his body and the lining of his lungs were burned. His chances of survival did not look very good and even the Chaplain was called in. My son was 9yrs old. Dr Jost had performed many skilled surgeries along with comforting our large family with his compassionate bedside manners. My son lived because of Dr Jost. We spent the following years up to the age of 21 with multiple successful surgeries. My son is now a police officer. My mother in law was also in a house fire in 1996 and he was her Dr also. RIP Dr Jost for your crown is priceless...Karen Ogden (Wichita, Ks.)

I knew Dr. Jost going back to when he "had" to go through his medicine residency. He never lost his sense of humor along with his compassion and his patients came first. He rescued me out of many situations during our Trauma years at VC St. Joe, and still remembered me as I walked thru the halls of old St. Francis a couple years ago during my Case Mgmt fiasco. He never forgot me, nor I him. We shared many war stories and always parted friends with a smile and a laff. That's how I will remember you, Dr. J., with a smile. You gave many people a smile here on Earth. Now you are giving God and the angels smiles. God Bless you, and I am so glad you passed through my life. You made my life a bit happier.

I am a better nurse, friend and Shocker fan because I knew Gary Jost. He was a exceptional & innovative burn surgeon. Over our time together in the Burn Center I watched him practice compassionate care and teach others to do the same. He was a great friend and brought people together to enjoy WSU basketball, food, games and laughter. ( I was never going to beat him at Monopoly). He was a devoted & generous husband, dad & papa. He will always be remembered for his smile and gentle nature. He will be greatly missed my many. Bella Jost, Gary's granddaughter stated in her eulogy, " I wonder what the world will be like without papa. " I'm not sure I want to find out, but I do know that the world is a better place for many because of Gary Jost.

Over 25 years ago, Dr Jost gave this young, new therapist the gift of his knowledge and trust allowing me the confidence to work as part of the burn center team. His compassion, his desire to heal, but also his laughter and humor made him an incredible physician, team leader and champion for those he served. You will be missed Dr Jost.... Thanks for being such a memorable mentor and for the care you provided for my family.

Dr. Jost was a pioneer in burn care who was not afraid to create, develop and apply new techniques and methods for the betterment of patient care. A truly pivotal person in my life, he was there to coach, counsel, and lead. He took me under his wings as a "baby" nurse and helped me grow into the leader I was. You will be missed my friend, but never forgotten.

It is with great sadness that I learned of Gary's passing away. He was a gentleman and a true patient advocate - qualities that every surgeon should strive for. The entire burn community will miss a gifted surgeon - and essentially the "father" of burn care in Wichita. His character will live on through the countless lives that he has helped and the hundreds of residents and students that he has inspired and taught. Wishing peace and strength to Janet and the entire Jost family.

Dr. Jost was the best teacher and co-worker I ever had. During the time I worked in the Burn Center, I found him to be very compassionate and knowledgeable. He was a good teacher and talented at teaching all people he worked with ,and you could see the love for his work in every thing he did.

A man above all men. Young and afraid I was, he tall and seemingly gruff. A burn surgeon guru. I stepped on the foot pedal of my mayo stand, sending it crashing and things scattering to the floor. I quickly apologised. He gently and calmly giggled and said,"Are you going to do anything today?" Many more memories and my ultimate respect. I am so sorry for your families loss. I am certain he has left a spot none can ever fill.

Dr. Jost was a wonderful surgeon and teacher. I learned a great deal from him, and I continue to use this knowledge in my daily practice. Certainly he did a great deal for his own patients, but through his former residents, his contributions to patient care are exponential.

Many years ago, I worked a couple days a week for only a year in the burn unit. I recall the kindness from both Dr. Jost, and from Janet. I was invited to stop by their home on the occasion of their wedding celebration, to enjoy a beer and fellowship, which I did. Joy was plentiful that day! My sincere condolences to Janet and to the family.

I am so sad to hear this. Dr Jost wa son of my favorite TSICU docs! He would always take the time to teach me something new, and listen when I called with concerns. He will be greatly missed! And I'll never forget his cool style! I actually had just mentioned him to another nurse I am training, telling her how great he was, and how every patient was their person, and should be treated as such.
