GARY KOENIG

"Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints." Psalms 116:15
EL CAMPO - Gary Koenig, age 71, went to be with the Lord Jesus Christ on Oct. 3, 2011. He was born Sept. 14, 1940, in El Campo, Texas, to Dagmar Carlsen Koenig and Joe Koenig, Jr. Gary was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Wharton, and his church family was very dear to him. Over the years, he served in various offices in the church, including Vice-president of the congregation, Properties Chairman, Youth Counselor, and Church Elder. Gary's greatest desire in this earthly life was to love God and to help other people in any way he could. He was a man of projects who believed in improving the world around him. Gary loved spending time with his boys and spent many happy days with them, camping, hunting, fishing, and S.C.U.B.A. diving. He loved his Lord, his family, and his friends, and he will long be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor. He was dearly loved and will be deeply missed.
Gary was preceded in death by one son, Chris Koenig; by his parents; and by two brothers, Charles and Ronald Koenig. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Carol Koenig; by two sons and daughter-in-law, Ron and Holly Koenig, and Greg and Jeanette Koenig; by three grandchildren, Hailee, Grant, and Tyler Koenig; by his sister-in-law Dolores Koenig; and by a host of other family members and friends.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011, from 5-8 p.m. at the Wharton Funeral Home. The funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. Barry Sharp at St. John's Lutheran Church in Wharton, at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 7, 2011. Pallbearers will be Keith Bahn, Max Barbee, Mike Barnes, Lonnie Beard, Ron Boerger, Weldon Boerger, Art Matthys, and Craig Ullmann. Honorary Pall Bearers will be Archie Malcom, Don Matthys, Weldon Matthys, Sherman Matthys, Bill Matthys, Larry Matthys, David Matthys, Will Hill, Virgil Peterson, Dr. Bill Yankowsky, and Gaylon Harvey. In lieu of usual remembrances, the family requests memorials are made to St. John's Lutheran Building Fund or St. John's Organ Fund. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.
