Gary Martin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 1, 2025.
Gary Roy Martin, Sr., age 82, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2025, in Southgate, Michigan. Born on January 14, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan, Gary lived a life marked by dedication to family, hard work, and community service.

From an early age, Gary was immersed in the world of automobiles. He spent two decades working at his family's auto salvage yard while also driving semi-trucks for Becker's Produce Co. in Detroit. It was during his time at Becker's that he met the love of his life, Connie. Their bond would become the foundation of a loving family and a lifetime of shared memories.

Later in life, Gary transitioned into a new chapter as a new car salesman at Genthe Chevrolet. He took great pride in this role and remained there until his retirement. His passion for cars extended beyond work-he raced at Flat Rock Speedway for many years and restored countless vehicles over the decades. There wasn't much he couldn't fix or build with his own hands.

Upon retiring, Gary found joy in tending to his home and garden. He took immense pride in maintaining a beautiful yard and enjoyed spending time outdoors. After moving to Southgate, he became deeply involved in his community. As president of his neighborhood HOA, he played a key role in leading the noise reduction wall initiative alongside Southgate Mayor and close friend Joseph Kuspa. His commitment to civic engagement continued through his service on both the Board of Zoning and Appeals and the Ethics Committee.

Family was always at the heart of Gary's life. He is survived by his devoted wife Connie; his loving children Cherie (Daniel) Wright, Lori Conners, Stacey Martin (Eric) Fox, and Adam (Keith) Roberts; as well as grandchildren Justin and Brandon Wright; Craig, Carrie, and Kurt Conners; Madison and Rylee Martin; Ashley Jewel; Gregory Conley; and ten great-grandchildren. He cherished every holiday and family gathering-traditions passed down from his parents that he held dear.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Sophia Martin; his sister Nancy Stevens; and his beloved son Gary R. Martin Jr.

His unwavering love for Connie, steadfast support for his children, deep appreciation for tradition, and tireless work ethic leave behind a legacy that will be remembered by all who knew him.

May his memory bring comfort to those who loved him and inspiration to those who carry forward the values he lived by.

I was fortunate to have had the Martin Family as my 2nd family! I have such fond memories of Mr Martin racing his car at the Flat Rock Speedway. All of us kids were able to get autographs of the other racers. We felt so special! Mrs Martin had great snacks ready for all of us as we compared our autographs. I am sorry for your loss. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

Gary was good man. He was very kind, thoughtful, hard working and passionate about family (and cars). I enjoyed many conversations with Gary and Connie over the years. My thoughts and prayers are with Connie and family. He will be truly missed.

Connie, we are so sad to hear of Gary´s passing. He was a great neighbor, always remembered our kids on Halloween and always cared so much about our neighborhood. Our prayers are with you and your family. Donald & Theresa Thomas

Gary is my sister Connie´s husband. I had the pleasure of going camping with him, my sister and the kids. He made the trip so much fun for us all.
Gary helped me and my Mom get my first 2 cars. He was good man to many. May he rest in peace. Love, Tammy Honey
