It is with sadness at our loss, but also gratefulness for his well-lived life that we announce the passing of our brother, Gary (Marty) M. Amble, 75, at his home in Denver, on August 2, 2022.
He was born on October 16, 1946 in Sioux Falls, SD to Elmer and Doris Amble. Marty graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1964 and then graduated in 1968 from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. He was a member of the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity and he kept in contact with many of his frat brothers and attended many SDSM&T reunions and events.
Marty began his professional career with the Shell Chemical Co. and then as an engineering consultant. The bulk of his career was spent in real estate property management, and the director of various community projects. He was particularly invested in Colfax on the Hill, first as it’s executive director in 1986 and more recently as the recipient of the Character of Colfax Award in 2018 for his vision and role in the planting of trees along the avenue 32 years ago.
He was a leader in political activism. With the Denver Democrats, especially House District 9, he worked enthusiastically on campaigns and other issues with his many like-minded friends. He was awarded the Frank Sullivan Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019. Marty found relaxation as a member of the Sports and Social Connections group in Denver. With his friends there he enjoyed many activities including hiking, bowling, attending many special events, caroling, and parties. Marty loved the city life with all of its people, diversity, events and restaurants. He especially loved outdoor adventures and traveling. Some of his highlights include hiking Grand Canyon, AZ; Longs Peak, Co; Cloud Peak, Wy; and Black Elk Peak, SD. Some of his travels took him across the US and to many National Parks. He traveled abroad to China, Aruba, Panama, Belize, Peru, Switzerland, Amsterdam and cruised on the Rhine River. One of his earliest excursions was as a crew member of a sailing vessel.
Marty was an avid volunteer. With HistoriCorps, a nonprofit, he used his skills and energy to help preserve historical sites, the most recent was this summer for the Devil’s Head Fire Lookout in Colorado. When living for a brief time in Sioux Falls, SD, he volunteered as part of the chase team for hot air balloons.
Family was always a priority for Marty. He showed up for birthdays, graduations, weddings, holidays, family reunions. With his brother’s and sister’s family, they traveled together, vacationed together, hiked together, camped together, canoed together, enjoyed baseball games and cheered on the Broncos together.
He is survived by his brother Greg (Beth) Amble of Sioux Falls, SD and his sister Mary (Wayne) Boots of Custer, SD; nieces and nephews David (Jasmine) Amble, CO, Becky Amble, SD; Rachel (Trevor)Lawhorn, SD; Robin (Boots) Buterbaugh, SD; Roy Boots, WA; Ross Boots, WA; and grand nephews and nieces Loren, Layne, Kemper, Sayers, Maddox and Tabitha. Marty was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Doris (Olsen) Amble.
A Friendship Memorial Gathering in Denver, will take place Friday, September 9, 2022 at 4:00pm at the Carla Madison Rec Center, 2401 E. Colfax Ave, Denver, CO 80206. A service in Sioux Falls, SD is still pending which will be followed by interment at Hills of Rest Cemetery in Sioux Falls, SD.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to; Children’s Home Society of Sioux Falls, SD, Historicorps, and Center for Western Studies, Augustana University, Sioux Falls, SD.

I knew Marty Amble since the middle 70's when we both worked for Phillips Reister Consulting firm. After he left them and eventually worked on East Colfax we remained friends. After I retired in Western Colorado, Marty and I visited and talked on the phone often, Marty was a wonderful friend and fellow coworker. I will miss his smart and kind ways. Rest in Peace Marty.

I only met Marty a couple of times while playing golf with SSC. I hit a shot that brought down some dead branches . . . next hole I found those branches in the back of the Golf Cart. I thought it hilarious, loved the guy.
So sorry for your loss.
In reading up on Marty . . . my name is Gary, my Mother is from Milbank, Mom met Dad in Sioux Falls and my oldest sister was born in Sioux falls.
So much in common, which we had connected earlier!
God Bless!

As it seems with everyone here I was shocked and saddened to learn of Marty´s sudden passing. We met at a Delta Sigma Phi fraternity "smoker" in the fall of 1965 when Marty bought me my first legally of age beer. I thought it amusing at the time that someone who went by what is actually my first name would be the one to share the occasion with me. We maintained contact over all these years through reunions, emails, Facebook and the sporadic meetings when I would be in Denver. I always enjoyed our discussions and Marty´s views on a variety of topics. We shared a love of travel and I was so happy to see that Marty was doing the latter with vigor up until the very end. In a somewhat ironic bookending of our friendship Marty and I hiked Black Elk Peak in July, 2021 on our last outing with each other. At the conclusion of our trek Marty pulled out two plastic wine glasses and a small bottle of wine to toast the event - he always loved a good beer or wine. Thanks for the memories Marty!

I knew Marty through political events, such as Move to Amend, and saw him around at various places. He was always polite, kind, knowledgeable and a great activist. We still need him! I was shocked at his passing and he will be greatly missed!

Sandi & I were saddened to hear of Marty’s passing. Marty & I were roommates in the Sig House in 1965. He was quiet and easy to get along with. He did throw shoes at me when I (on rare occasions) used to snore loudly. The errant shoes didn’t bother us much since we were both a bit messy. We both ended up working for Shell Chemical at the start of our careers, and both ended up following other pursuits. We will miss him at future reunions.

I was saddened to learn of Marty's passing. Knew him for over 50 - almost 60 - years, since we were fraternity brothers at SDSM&T. Marty was a regular attendee at every school or fraternity reunion that I recall, and a visit with Mary was always a positive experience. In the years, I don't recall a single instance where he was anything but pleasant and agreeable. Sad that we will no longer see his friend face at future gatherings. He will be missed.

My sincerest condolences to his family and friends. I have known Marty for many years; he has always been kind, considerate, honest, and adventurous. His more recent volunteer work and political activism made the world a better place.
