I began drum lessons with Gary when I was in 3rd grade. He was incredibly supportive, instructive, and a great influence on me. I'm so sorry to realize we lost him at such a young age. He was such an influence on so many people! Teachers are the best!

I just heard about the passing of Mr. Mac. I was a graduate of the class of '76. He came to Canton High as a fairly new graduate from Berkely School of Music, and worked and under the tutolage of Mr. Judge. He took over when Mr. Judge retired. He was welcoming, supportive, and a great mentor to all of us band geeks. It was always a pleasure to spend time in band. He welcomed us all, no matter how well we played. He would laugh with us as we tried our best to do the Half time show during the football games. He would march with us in all the parades, hang with us in the Jazz band at hockey games, and try to get us to keep time in the pit band for school plays. Of course our concerts were the most fun!Thank you for your dedication. You are missed.

As a CHS alumni who had Mr. McNamara for all 4 years, it is so sad to hear this news. My sympathy to his family and friends.

Gary was a wonderful addition to Canton's Music staff. Most of all he was such a kind, encouraging and talented teacher,as well. He leaves the programs far better than when he came to Canton. A great loss, indeed.Sincerest and heartfelt condolences to all who knew him. He will be missed and very surely he will be remembered.
Very sincerely,

I haven't seen Gary for so many years - not since back in the Foxboro High School days. He was always a good kid. Not surprised to read that he hadn't changed and that he made such a positive impact on so many young people. Deepest sympathies to his family and dear friends. Rest in peace, Gary - gone way too soon

Such heartbreaking news. As a CHS alum, I haven't seen Mr. Mac in 20 years, but I'll always remember him for his welcoming spirit in the band classroom and on the football field. He connected with high schoolers --- not always an easy thing to do. Much love to his family. He will be missed.

Mr. McNamara, music and band director gave opportunities to many students at Canton High School. My son, Eric Woods, entered CHS with only a few months of music lessons and Mr. McNamara welcomed him into the Canton High Band. He introduced Eric to a number of instruments and shared his love of music with him. Eric as well as my other two children Karen and Laura benefited from Gary McNamara's musical leadership throughout their years in musicals and the band.
Gary McNamara not only taught music, he inspired students to perform and also mentored many students helping to create a community which nurtured the arts.
He will be missed by many and remembered by all!
