Gary Moeller Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 20, 2022.

Gary was born on April 28, 1949 in San Antonio, Texas to Robert and “Dolly” Moeller. He graduated from LaSalle High School and went on to graduate from West Texas State, now West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas. While at WT he was on the University bowling team, bowling being a Moeller family pastime. He loved to explore and backpacked across Europe. Following his time at WT, he met the love of his life Rose. Gary was committed to anything he started and everyone he loved. Gary was an accomplished musician and song writer. Following his time at WT, he served as lead guitarist and vocalist for the Stutz Bearkats whose members remain lifelong friends. He proudly worked for the City of San Antonio for 33 years, retiring as the Director of Information Services in 2005. During his tenure, he helped pioneer several projects that turned the City into a technological leader.

He is survived by his wife Rose Marie Moeller of 48 years; his two sons Jay (Kelly) Moeller and Brian (Conner) Moeller. His grandchildren are Morgan, Macy, David and Austen Moeller. He is also survived by his brother Bobby (Ginger) Moeller of San Antonio, Texas and numerous cousins.

Gary was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ. He went home to be with His Lord on September 17, 2022. He was kind, calming, and never compromising in his determination to do the right thing. Gary was an innovator throughout his life. From building technology systems, to building both his and his father’s homes, to writing songs up the end of his life, Gary was brilliant. During his retirement years, he returned to his life passion for music. He wrote and co-wrote 150+ songs ranging from country music, his favorite trop rock and faith. He spent hours with his best friend and fellow “Salt Lifer” Rick Hoefel talking, writing, and playing music together. Many of his songs rose into the Top 10 Charts for Trop Rock including #1 song “Castles in the Sand.” His final song, “God Never Gives Up” was written just a month before his passing which communicated his great love and faith in Jesus.

Visitation will be at Legacy Church in New Braunfels on Thursday, September 22, 2022 from 5:00-6:00pm. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 6:00pm.

His Mass will be held Friday, September 23, 2022 11:00am at St. Mark The Evangelist in San Antonio off Thousand Oaks followed by a burial service at Holy Cross Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to the Wounded Warriors Project in his name. A portion of every album Gary sold always went to this cause.

I never met Gary personally, but I feel that I knew him through his wonderful music and the many times Patricia and Fes mentioned him.

Gary and my dad John Schulz were best friends since grade school. Over the years I've recalled countless stories told to me by my dad with a smile on his face and infectious positivity in his eyes. Coming-of-age stories of him and Gary going through life together. Whether it was Gary and John hustling after school to get the boat lined up and ready so that Jack, my dad's dad, could just back his truck in after coming home from work and connect the boat. Just so they could go to the lake, Canyon lake, I'm sure, to fish...Or how they would chase each other around the neighborhood in a game of "tag" as boys tend to do growing up. Or how they may have allegedly utilized the new technology of CBs to stay ahead of the smokeys and get back home from college more expeditiously.

My dad always lit up like a Christmas tree when talking about Gary; I could tell then and now that Gary and he were best friends. Once you start raising a family, life happens, and my memories of going to visit Gary and Rose, and Jay became fewer and fewer over the years. These memories were before you were born, Brian. My last few memories were happy times for me. Seeing the Moellers at their finally finished house and swimming in their pool, and playing basketball with Gary, Jay, Brian, and my dad. I was in high school then, and life tends to speed up for teenagers at that stage. But it was a happy memory that I still cling to this day.

The last time I saw Gary was at my Grandpa Jack's funeral in New Braunfels in 2004. I would have said more to him; I believe he said hello to me, but it was all a blur, as barely 96 hours beforehand, I was in Iraq heading home. That was my 4th funeral in 2 years, and it all seemed so surreal that I've often thought back to that time. One of the takeaways I had out of all that was that Gary showed up for my dad at my grandpa's funeral. That meant something to my dad, I could tell, and over time as I processed it, it meant something to me too.

All that to say, Rose, Jay, and Brian, I'm sorry I could not be there in your time of grief. I hope this letter provides you with some solace and comfort in your time of mourning.

Gary was one of the most generous people I know. I loved the times he played for various charitable organizations including the Wood Mansion in Bayside, Toys for Tots, and many others. One of Gary's songs was "Life's Like A Painting"....Gary's Painting is beautiful. You will be truly, lovingly missed.
