Gary David Palmer, age 80, died Thursday, March 23, 2022 in Omaha. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Carole, brothers Art and Owen, and sisters Marla and Diane. Sister Carol Helsing also died this week. Memorial Service: 10am - Saturday - March 26, 2022 Roeder Mortuary, Inc. – Gretna Chapel 11710 Standing Stone – Gretna, NE 402-332-0090 www.RoederMortuary.com Gary was born in Lincoln - sixth of eight children of Arthur Franklin and Abbie (Housel) Palmer - on January 8, 1942. Gary grew up on the Palmer homestead a few miles west of Davey, attending District 55 country school. After moving to Lincoln, the four youngest Palmers attended NE HS, where Gary participated in football and track, graduating in 1959. Following UNL graduation in 1964, Gary served in the Peace Corps in India, then returned stateside to teach high school in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, where he met and married the love of his life, Carole Gerke. In July 1966, Gary joined the Seabees Navy Construction Battalion with his friend Glen Rolofson, serving until July 1968, including several months in Chu Lai, Vietnam. Returning home, Gary taught and/or coached in several high schools, among them: Stevens Point, Wisconsin; Brainard, Nebraska; Clark Fork, Idaho and Sandpoint, Idaho. Teaching in Idaho from 1977, Gary enjoyed summers working in restaurant kitchens, and his family and friends delighted in his enthusiasm and culinary skills for decades thereafter. For six years, Gary also contributed articles and photos to the Sandpoint Daily Bee. Eventually, Gary was hired to teach high school in US Department of Defense Dependent Schools serving military families abroad, so in 1983, he and Carole moved, with their four school-age sons, to Bad Kreuznach, Germany, where he taught until his retirement. In addition to teaching art, Gary coached winning football teams that competed with other DODD Schools throughout Europe: the Bearcats were Benenor Conference Champions in 1988; A Central Conference Champs 1989-90; winners of the Small School Semifinals in 1990, and Champion of the Small School Conference in 1992. In 2003, Gary and Carole retired to Lincoln, living in Bethany until Carole's death in 2005, at age 59. Gary is survived by four sons: Chris Palmer of Idaho; Brett (MaryAnn) Palmer of Massachusetts; Jason (Sabine) Palmer of Germany; Brandon (Jen) Palmer, of Nebraska; and seven grandchildren. Gary will be missed by his sister, Harriet Reubsamen; his brother, James (Pamela); many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members; as well as a host of friends who were his coworkers or students.

Sending my condolences and love to the Palmer family. Gary was an absolutely wonderful human beingsmart, funny, talented, kind, considerate, engaging. He was my role model for his gentle guidance and his listening. I miss him and hope he knew the admiration I still hold for him even after all these decades. I am grateful to have known him as a former student and friend.

I vividly remember the first time I met Gary in 1975. It was one of those beautiful mid-summer days and we were living in the Loman cabin then. An old green pickup with a camper on the back drove up the driveway. I didn't recognize the rig and when it stopped, a man and three young boys hopped out of the truck.

He introduced himself and said that he was a high school classmate of Glen Rolofson's. I knew who he was then because I had already heard the stories about Glen and his friend, Gary who lived one winter in the Loman cabin several years back. That was the moment that a great friendship began.

His wife, Carole, had a beautiful singing voice and many times on weekends we would get together to play games and/or sing some tunes. Two of her favorites were, Can't Help Lovin' That Man and Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue. She was an elementary school teacher and began in Clark Fork and then transferred to Farmin Elementary. Sadly, she passed away several years before Gary.

We all had many things in common since I was from Nebraska as were Glen and Gary. Naturally, that meant we were all Nebraska football fans.

I would take care of their 4th son, Brandon, from the time he was 3 months old until he was about 4 years old. During that time David thought of Brandon as his little brother and became pretty miffed when Brandon's older brothers, Chris, Brett and Jason, would show up from school and take over.

It was a rough time economically in this area and after about ten years, Gary and family left for a really big adventure to teaching positions with the armed services in Germany. We saw them only a couple of times after that, but now their oldest son, Chris, lives in Sandpoint. We really enjoy visiting with him every once in awhile.

I remember Mr. Palmer driving me, my brother, along with his sons to Monsters of Rock 1986 in Mannheim Germany. I enjoyed art class with Mr. Palmer. I'll never forget him helping me after class with pottery; I still have that piece. My deepest sympathies and condolences.

Palmer Family,

I'm sorry for your loss. Thoughts and prayers to you. I enjoyed taking Art class with your father my senior year in high school. I still have some drawings I kept, which are still in Germany with my parents. He was one of my favorite teacher.
