Gary Pino Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 3, 2025.
Gary Richard Pino passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, May 31, 2025, in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the age of 74.

Born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, Gary grew up with a strong work ethic, getting his start in the family business by making fruit baskets at Pino's Market during the holidays. He graduated from Highland Park High School in 1969, where he was a proud member of the band, playing several instruments but mainly, the clarinet.

After high school, Gary enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving bravely as a Combat Controller during the Vietnam War as part of the 8th Aerial Port Squadron. His service earned him several honors, including a Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Valor and the Air Force Good Conduct Medal. He often shared stories of his experiences while in the service.

Following his honorable discharge in 1973, Gary moved to Boulder, Colorado, where he began working as a postman before venturing into the restaurant business. He opened several restaurants, including the beloved Pino's Deli and later, The Gunpark Deli, which he owned and operated for 18 years. In 1984, he married Diana Kearns (Mohler) and in 1985, they welcomed their daughter, Rebecca, who was the light of his life.

Gary had a talent for forming lasting friendships, whether through pickup basketball games at the CU Fieldhouse, golfing at the Boulder Country Club, or during his successful career in car sales with Autonation's Honda store on 104th. His charisma, humor, and genuine nature made him a favorite among customers and coworkers alike.

In retirement, Gary split his time between his favorite destinations, Cabo San Jose, Mexico, and Las Vegas, where he ultimately made his home. He found joy in life's simple pleasures-reading, painting, caring for the neighborhood cats, and spending time at Dotty's Casino, always surrounded by friends.

He is survived by his daughter, Rebecca Pino; her mother, Diana Kearns; siblings Judith (Jeffrey) Moore, Cindy (Marsha) Stevens-Pino, Christopher Pino, Joann Pino, Todd Pino, Craig (Alice) Pino; many beloved nieces and nephews; and his two closest lifelong friends, Ron Barry and Coach Joe Harrington, whom he spoke with daily. Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Gerard Pino and Joann Swann.

Per Gary's wishes, no services will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his memory to The Animal Foundation, a local Las Vegas animal shelter.

Gary will be remembered for his loyalty, humor, service, and the deep connections he forged wherever he went. He will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved him.

My name is Eva and I'm a bartender at 1 of Gary's local Dotty's. He was a sweet, kind man who will be missed. I still expect him to walk thru the doors and tell me one of his story's. My husband Chris and I knew him for quiet some time and loved him dearly. Rest in peace Mr Gary.

Gary was a very good friend of mine especially from junior high into our late teens. We were quite adventurous compared with our peers....thanks to Gary. We had travels into New York on multiple occasions, other high schools, and Rutgers. He got me a job working at Pino´s but his Dad, Gerry, had to teach me how to drive a stick shift. He gave to the job, and I never once crashed the truck. A real prankster, Gary made life more fun. Dearly missed

Dad, you are the apple of my eye. As a young girl, I remember thinking I had to best dad ever! My dad could do anything! No matter what, you were always my 1st call when something was wrong. My hero. I love you. I´m sorry our story had to come to an end like this but I know you are in peace and not in some awful hospital bed full of tubes and doctors! Getting old is tough, as you would say. Be free. I know you are with so many loved ones, like your best friend, Lee. Don´t worry about me. I have all the lesson and knowledge you enstilled in me. I´m your blood and so much like you so trust that I will be just fine. I love you and Bubby misses you. If he could cry, he would. Till I see you again. Muah. Xoxo

He was always a great big brother. He was fearless and brave. He was talented and gifted in so many ways. I looked up to him and loved that he took me under his wing as I learned to play clarinet and saxophone. He always had so many friends and everywhere I went I was "Pino´s little sister". He lived a full life. He will be missed.

As a 7 year old child I looked at my brother as a hero soldier. And forever will be my hero
