Gary Ray Saville, age 77, of Westminster, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 27, 2024 at his home.
Born April 25, 1947 in Cumberland, MD, he was the son of the late Ray Saville and Pauline Fitro. He was the beloved husband of Dorothy E. Saville, his wife of 19 years.
Gary was raised in the Romney, WV area and grew up on the family orchard with his cousins, where he spent those years helping to build the orchard.
After graduating from high school he enlisted in the Air Force and served honorably as a fire fighter until his discharge in 1970.
For many years he lived in Jessup, MD, where he enjoyed farming and was known as the "corn king" for his superb sweet corn. He was also a member of the Jessup Volunteer Fire Dept. He spent more time in Romney, WV before relocating to his current home near Westminster. He was a well-known resident wherever he lived.
He was employed for 40 years as a truck driver with Westinghouse, now Northrup Grumman, retiring at the age of 58. But his heart was always in farming and tinkering with tractors, mostly John Deere.
He was an outdoorsman, and an avid hunter of rabbits and deer and loved camping. He and his wife Dorothy enjoyed square dancing and taking many cruise vacations.
Gary was a former member of Westminster Church of the Brethren, where he was the sound man for 10 years, and currently he was a member of Sam's Creek Church of the Brethren, near Marston.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Richard Saville, Sarah Saville and husband Tim Leydig and Daniel Saville and wife Kelly, all of Maryland; grandchildren, Raelynn Saville, Maxwell Saville and Matthew Hodgdon; and a cousin, Kay Shannon who was like a sister to him.
A funeral service will be held at 12 noon Saturday, December 7 at Sam's Creek Church of the Brethren, 2736 Marston Rd. (
New Windsor, MD 21776) with Rev. Paul Leatherman and Billy Horton, officiating. Interment will follow in Sam's Creek Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 4-6 p.m. Friday, December 6 at Hartzler Funeral Home 310 Church St., New Windsor.
