Gary Delane Shipman, 84, passed away peacefully in Plano, Texas on June 14, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on November 7, 1939, in McKinney to Pressly and Evelyn Martin Shipman. Gary was raised alongside his older brother Ronald Shipman in McKinney, where he immersed himself in the rich cultural community of the town.
He served in the US Coast Guard from 1958- 66. He achieved the rank of Firefighter Third Class and served as a Firefighter Instructor.
Gary was married to the love of his life, Barbara Dobbs Shipman for 56 years, and together they raised three children, Loren, Kim and Sayle Shipman.
Family was central to Gary's life, and he cherished his role as a father and grandfather. He leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion to his seven grandchildren in order of birth - Devon Pierce, Keenan Godburn, Jack Stark, Austin Godburn, Mackenzie Stark, Madison Stark, and Gavin Shipman, and three great-grandchildren, Damron Pierce, Emmett and Everett Stark.
A man of deep faith, Gary was devoted to his religious beliefs and enjoyed Bible study and attending church, following the teachings instilled in him by his grandmother, Josie Martin.
Gary had a passion for music, which he shared with his brother Ron at the original Rubaiyat Coffeehouse in Dallas, where they performed together. As a young adult, he played church baseball and sang in the church choir, showcasing his love for both sports and music. Gary also had a lifelong love of sailing, which he also shared with his brother Ron. His friendly demeanor, beautiful voice, and sharp sense of humor endeared him to everyone he met.
In 1974, Gary moved his young family to The Colony at the beginning of the community's establishment. He became the president of the homeowner's association and played a pivotal role in the incorporation of The Colony as a city. Gary's commitment to civic duty was further demonstrated when he ran for and served as Alderman and City Councilman and Councilman / Mayor Pro Tem on the first two councils of the newly formed city. His leadership and vision helped shape The Colony into the thriving community it is today. His contributions to the local community and his dedication to his family and faith will be remembered by all who knew him.
In his professional life, Gary had a successful career in management at Sears and JCPenney before venturing into entrepreneurship by opening his own furniture store in 1978. He and Barbara owned and operated several hair salons during their time living in Carrollton. He later pursued an occupation in real estate alongside his wife, Barbara. Gary was an avid lifetime golfer, enjoying the sport throughout his life. He found great joy and relaxation on the golf course, often playing rounds with friends and family. His love for golf was a testament to his active and vibrant spirit.
Gary and Barbara were inseparable partners in life and shared a deep passion for music and dancing, particularly East Coast swing and ballroom styles. Their love for these rhythms resonated through their years together, adding joy and harmony to every step of their journey.
He also found freedom in exploring new destinations with Barbara during their retirement. Their adventurous spirit led them to RV across the United States and embark on numerous cruises. Together, they created countless cherished memories throughout their journeys.
Gary was preceded in death by his father, Pressly Shipman, his mother, Evelyn Shipman, and his brother, Ronald Shipman. He leaves behind a loving family, numerous friends, and a community who will miss him dearly.
A private family memorial service to celebrate Gary's life will be held in July and will be memorialized in the Fitzhugh Cemetery in Lucas, Texas.
Gary Shipman's life was a testament to love, faith, and laughter, and his memory will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have known him.
