Gary Steen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 26, 2025.
Gary Lee Steen, 76, passed away on March 20, 2025, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Born on January 13, 1949, in Brookings, South Dakota, Gary grew up with a strong sense of dedication and perseverance. He graduated from Brookings High School in the class of 1967 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from South Dakota State University in 1972. His career as a civil engineer was marked by expertise and leadership. He began as an assistant civil engineer in Brookings before moving to Lincoln, Nebraska, where he joined Olsson Associates. Later, he played a pivotal role in opening the Olsson Associates branch in Colorado Springs. His career continued with Monument Valley Engineers and he was a consultant to Fountain Mutual Irrigation Company. Gary also served as Chairman of the Board over District 10 Water and worked as a consultant for the city utility company, contributing to the planning and development of various neighborhood subdivisions within Colorado Springs.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Gary was known for his kindness, wisdom, and generosity. He had an innate ability to solve problems and was always willing to lend his time and resources to others. A devoted family man, he cherished spending time with his loved ones-whether playing golf with family and friends, grilling out together, or simply enjoying the outdoors while tending to his meticulously groomed lawn. He found great joy in watching sports and soaking up the sun on his deck.

Gary shared a lifelong love story with his high school sweetheart and wife of 55 years, Mary (Moulton) Steen. Together, they traveled the world with friends and family, creating cherished memories along the way. He also treasured annual fishing trips to Canada with his brothers, friends, and nephews. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed pheasant and elk hunting as well.

He is survived by his beloved wife Mary; their children Mike Steen (Sarah), Michelle Heeks (Jayson), and Matt Steen (Heidi Lauterbach); grandchildren Braden Burson (Alex), Trever Heeks, Colby Burson, Gavin Heeks, Avery Burson, Lily Steen, and Simon Heeks; as well as many extended family members and dear friends who will miss him deeply.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents Leon Steen and Dona Steen-Wallum; stepfather Deone Wallum; brother David Steen; and grandson Tazmun Heeks.

A Celebration of Life will be held on April 12, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Zeal Church, located at 755 Citadel Drive W in Colorado Springs. Family and friends are invited to join in honoring Gary's life and legacy.

His memory will live on through the countless lives he touched with his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering love for family.

In Gary's work for the Fountain Mutual Irrigation Company for so many years, he and I would frequently be on the phone to talk about getting water delivered for our clients City of Fountain, Security Water District, and Widefield. We would talk about the water, but then invariably the discussion would shift to things that good friends chat about - how we were doing and what was going on in our lives. Many, many of such conversations over the years. He was such a joy to work with, and I am very sad for his passing!

The more enriched a person makes our lives, the harder it is for us to let them go. For this reason, I know that saying goodbye to Gary will be the hardest sorrow to bear. We hope that the wonderful memories of Gary as well as the love and friendship you have around you, will support you through this time of sorrow.

You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers,
