Gary Zumann Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 2, 2024.
Wausau - Gary W. Zumann, age 83, passed away on Thursday, August 22, 2024, under the care of Compassus Hospice Services at Wausau Manor.

Gary was born on August 10, 1941, to the late William and Helen (Kummerow) Zumann. He attended Woodland Dale, a one-room schoolhouse in the Town of Stettin, through the 8th grade. He graduated from Wausau Senior High School in 1959 where he enjoyed playing on the baseball team.

After graduation, he was employed at Kraft Foods; where he would remain a dedicated employee for the next 40 years. Many co-workers became life-long friends. Following retirement from Kraft, he worked part-time at Motor Service and Supply for a number of years.

Gary married Karen Henke on February 1, 1964 at First English Lutheran Church in Wausau; she survives. Gary played on both the dartball and softball teams for First English and later enjoyed attending the retired men's breakfast group. In his younger years, he played baseball for Knotty Pine in the Lincoln County league and bowled for Vern's Barber Shop.

He was a proud dad to Sara (Shawn) Beliunas and Marla Zumann, and doted on his grandchildren, Emily and Jack Beliunas. His happiest days were found spending countless hours in the woods, hunting with the "Christian Crew", and golfing at the American Legion with good friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, paternal grandparents Carl & Louise (Moellendorf) Zumann, maternal grandparents Emil & Olga (Wilde) Kummerow; in-laws Alfred & Lorraine (Kluetz) Henke and brother-in-law & sister-in-law Jim & Dawn (Zillman) Henke; cousins - Shirley (Zuman) Kirstein, Dennis Schroeder, Karen (Schroeder) Buttke, and Mike Moellendorf; his beloved beagle Trixie and granddog Alex. He is survived by sisters Jacquelyn (Allan) Hanke, Shila (Maynard) Matthiae, Marlene (Donald) Westfall and Mary Jo (Steve) Brown, many nieces and nephews, and close friends and relatives.

Services will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, September 14 at First English Lutheran Church, 402 N. 3rd Avenue, Wausau, with visitation preceding at 9:30am. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 10 where Gary was a member for 40 years.

The family would like to thank all of the angels at Wausau Manor for their care of Gary in his last months, and the wonderful caregivers at Compassus Hospice Services during his final days. Memorials may be directed to First English or to the charity of your choice.
