Gene Vestal Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 10, 2025.
Springfield - Gene Lyle Vestal passed away on October 7, 2025. He was 67 years old.

Gene was born on October 12, 1957 to Tom and Barbara Vestal; and grew up in Southwest Missouri. Gene spent the majority of his career as a nursing home administrator in the region. His passion for serving others was evident throughout his work. He managed operations at numerous facilities, where his greatest focus was always the dignity, comfort and well-being for the residents under his care. He was known as a steadfast advocate for his staff, and created communities of empowered caregivers.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Jane E. Peterson, and two children from a previous marriage: Carrie Mack and husband, Travis, of Bend, Oregon; and Will Vestal of Seattle, WA. He was "Poppi" to his two grandchildren, Lewis and Lucy Mack.

Gene had a lifelong appreciation of nature and the outdoors - whether it be sitting on the deck watching wildlife, relaxing at the lake with his wife, Jane, or keeping up with his kids and grandkids on their latest adventures. He was a lifelong learner and could always give Macgyver a run for his money. His appreciation for good food, good music, and good company left him meaning so much to so many. He was able to appreciate both the big and small moments and had deep introspection for embracing it all. Like James Taylor says, "I've seen fire and I've seen rain. I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end."

Gene's services will be private. An informal come-and-go gathering for family and friends will be held from 10am to noon on Saturday, October 25, 2025 at Schweitzer Church (Entrance B), 2747 E Sunshine St. in Springfield, Missouri.

Those wishing to pay tribute to Gene are invited to plant a tree, reach out to a loved one, or send donations to Nature Conservancy, AARP, or Ozark Food Harvest.

Gene was a former high school student athlete where he was always a hard worker and fierce competitor with character plus.
We touched base from time to time over the years. I was always impressed with the positive difference he was making in his field of work and with the people he served.
Condolence for his family, friends and community.

We have such great memories of golfing, work/convention events, dinner at Arris pizza, more golfing, watching you both redesign a beautiful home together, learning to sail, and more golfing. Did I mention golfing? We will never forget all the work you and Gene did to decorate the stables for our wedding. The dining tables were beautiful. You just jumped right in to help my mom and aunt. We love you Janie and we will miss Gene. Praying for your comfort. Rob and Lynn Dvorak
