Geneva Burks

Funeral service for former Duncan resident, Geneva Burks, 94, of Seabrook TX, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at New Hope Baptist Church West, 380 S 42nd Street, Duncan OK, with Rev. Randy Southerland officiating.

Burial will follow at Duncan Municipal Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home.

Mrs. Burks passed away on Wednesday, January 22, 2025 at her home.

Geneva was born on August 18, 1930 in Sedwick, TX to William Floyd and Bethel C. (Bailey) Smith. She graduated from Duncan High School in 1948, and in 1949 she married Thomas Jerald (TJ) Burks. Together they enjoyed camping, fishing, church activities, and later in life country dancing. They moved to the Clear Lake, Texas area in 2016 to be nearer to family. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. Geneva never met a stranger, and was known affectionately on the cul de sac as "Granny." She was a devoted friend to all who met her. "Granny" loved life and was game for anything, even as she entered her 90th decade.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Sherri and Peter Verdone Jr., of Seabrook, TX, and Lynn Wayne and Cynthia Burks, of Diamond Barr, CA; her grandchildren, Nathan Burks, Harrison Burks, Nicole Verdone, and Ashley Verdone; and many other loving family members.

Geneva is preceded in death by her parents, and her husband of 68 years, Jerald "TJ" Burks, her sister Geraldine Shrum and brother Harold (Bud) Smith.
