Genevieve Schutter Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 29, 2010.
GENEVIEVE KIRKPATRICK SCHUTTER was born in Atlantic Iowa to Thomas and Elsie Kirkpatrick on June 4, 1921. She was raised in Iowa and attended Iowa State University in Ames. On June 26, 1942 she married Robert E. Schutter. During the war years Genevieve joined the Women's Army Corp. (WACS). She left the WACS in 1944 to give birth to their first son, Carl. Their second son, William, followed in 1948. After the war Genevieve and her family lived in Virginia, Germany, and Colorado.
After divorce in the early 1950's Genevieve and her sons returned to Iowa. She reentered Iowa State University and was graduated with a masters degree in psychology in 1956. Genevieve started her professional career in Ithaca N.Y. where she worked in the testing department at Cornell University. Subsequently, she worked for the U.S. Navy at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in North Chicago. She developed tests for new Naval recruits. She also worked in Washington D.C. at the headquarters of the U.S. Postal Service. There she designed employment exams for postal employees.
After retiring in 1981, Genevieve moved to Tucson Arizona. She was always interested in foreign cultures, and traveled widely around the globe. She remained active in Tucson until 2007. At that time she moved to the Denver area in Colorado in order to be closer to family. Her outgoing, warm, and friendly personality belied her intelligence, and determination to succeed for the sake of her loved ones. This was not lost on those who knew her, and served as a lifelong example to the family generation that succeeded her. She is survived by her sons Carl Schutter of Lakewood CO, William (Willie) Schutter of Tonanwanda NY, her grandchildren Will Schutter of Tonawanda NY, and Amanda Podrebarac of Binbrook Ontario Canada. There are also nieces and nephews who are scattered around the country and the world.

I know what a great loss this has been to Carl and Bill. She was a wonderful mother and left her sons with rich memories and values.

I only met Mrs. Schutter once many years ago at Carl's house. I was impressed with her stature and sophisticated presence. Having had a career in Psychology and psychological testing, I am impressed that she pioneered some of the vocational and intelligence testing that I am sure is used to this day.

I met her many times and was duly impressed. I'm sorry to have not been able to talk with her in past years and thought of her many times. You two boys are still part of our family and would to meet you again.

I didn't know Aunt Jenny too well. I just remember looking at her pictures a lot and thinking how beautiful she was! I have spoken on the phone with her a few times and remember how very kind she was. I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to all of her family. I just wish that I had known her better as you all were privileged to do. I'm glad she was in no pain. I'm sure that memories of her will sustain you all.
Much love from her niece,
Betty (Schutter) Davids... daughter of Art & Bert Schutter from Buffalo Center, IA
