Geoffrey Graham Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 27 to Nov. 29, 2009.
GRAHAM, Geoffrey Edwin Fredrick Geoffrey Edwin Fredrick Graham, loving father of Brittany and Mackenzie; husband, lover and best friend of the true "love of his life" Sandra, passed away on Tuesday, November 24, 2009 after 51 years of doing what he loved -- enjoying life to the fullest and loving his family. Born in Montreal, raised in Beaconsfield, educated at Carleton (BA Criminology '81), lived in Orleans and thrived at Tremblant. A 28 year veteran of the Ontario Provincial Police (Westport, Rockland and Major Crime East Region), Geoff was the good guy committed to catching the bad guys. An avid tele-mark skier he was obsessed with being the first on the mountain ever searching for the pow; nothing made him happier than stoking the fire at the F'Inn Cabin with the Woodcutters and a fine single malt. Respected by his peers, loved by his many, many special lifelong friends and cherished by his family including his parents Peter and Teddi (deceased), brother Jamie (Maureen), sister Jennifer (Andy) and dear Scott (Robin), brothers-in-law the other Scott (Patti) and Jamie (Nancy), Bob and Joan. He was the neatest uncle to Alex, Brendan, Jesse, Coco, Owen and Katie; Rob, Rick and Sam. Our Buffedviking, a devoted and relentless Viking fan (now they get Favre!), was bigger than life with a mischievous twinkle in his eye, a song always in his head and heart full of love for his girls -- he is so missed. Friends, colleagues and family are invited to share their stories and laughter and toast the Life of Geoff. A Scottish wake will be held on Saturday, November 28, 6:00 pm till 1:00 am at the Hampton Inn and Conference Centre, 200 Coventry Road off the Vanier Parkway. A service for family and friends will take place at the Beechwood Cemetery, 280 Beechwood Avenue, on Sunday, November 29th at 2:30 pm. Rather than flowers, a donation to Bruyere Continuing Care would be much appreciated. I know you like my pocket, I feel you watching down on us now and forever.

Hi Buff... Happy to receive updates reminding us all of your spirit presence is still here in our weird world 16 years after you departed for Heaven. I feel so much for Sandy and your girls, who meant the world to you. I was so sad to be in Sudan with the UN when you passed, so I missed the best wake there ever was (I'm told). I still have so many memories of you and I in a car together chatting. Stories told about catching GC DOB 10 May 71, or the file we did in Kenora (looking out our hotel window below and laughing at the sight we saw), or driving to Montreal for the Canada rally for the Que referendum and stopping at your favourite restaurant off the 40 for meatloaf or pork hocks. I told stories for years about how you sniffed out impaired drivers catching 4 in one shift, and all the laughs that went along with the police work. And all the sports stuff we did together (hockey, baseball, golf). But mostly the laughs you gave us, and the comaraderie that was unmatched. I was lucky to know you, and I WILL see you again someday... but not yet... not yet. Your presence is still felt here. Here's an old pic of all of us together in Winchester 1990 1st Responder Tourney which we won. Geoff/Buff/Teapot/DSSgt 6073 -- Mike Brehmer and I met for lunch and we spent a good part of it talking about you - 10 year anniv. - seems like yesterday in someways. Mike still wears your old scarf. Golfing without you just isn't the same anymore. Miss your competitive grin, being beaten by you by one stroke on the 18th green at Loch March will always be there. You're sense of humour was always looking for an opportunity and you could dish out practical jokes and take them too. You were the most respected guy in the Crime Unit. You loved your job but you're family more.

Buff... I retired 31 May 2018 last week. many of the old gang at the party. Your name came up several times in discussion. I still remember you and how you left us so young. Even the old OPS Major Crime Detectives were still talking about you. We still miss you man. I remember the laughs we had together as true brothers of the thin blue line. Playing hockey together and so many other things. Just thought I'd say hi to you up there. I'll see you again my friend... BUT not just yet... not yet! Keep watching over us all you big beautiful SHEEPDOG!

You always brought light to a group with your quick wit and friendly character. You were a great guy and an inspiration to anybody who wanted to be a good cop. I cherish the memories of the Cumberland Detachment especially with you there. Rest peacefully the world was a better place with you in it. My thoughts are with you and your beautiful family. Memories of Geoff and gang around the McKinnon kitchen table make me smile. I wasn't part of the gang, but I was in the back ground enjoying the banter.

Daddy,

It is hard to believe it has been 4 years since i've seen your smiley face. Heard the familiar sounds of football playing ever so softly in the background during on of our calls (we both know you weren't paying attention to me) . Grabbed your strong hand as I lost my balance on one of our hikes up Tremblant (yes you would still have to put just as much effort into convincing me to participate in those hikes). Heard the sound of you humming god knows what in the car. Telling me it'll be fine when the scary check engine light comes on in my car. Cracking my back (although Brit does try, your are the only one who knows how). Thinking today is the day you will get diagnosed with turrets but no.. you just stubbed your toe; and all the other classic Geoff Graham moves. I miss you every day more then the last; LUMU.

What a great pic as I read the paper today, showing that mischievous but warm and funny grin on the face of an old friend. Bringing back seemingly fresh memories of good times working cases with you in Cumberland/Clarence in the early days and through our C.U. time together (chasing G.C., losing dress shoes, your records set with DWI's, chainsaw crimes, etc). But moreso the laughs always and outside work, on our trip together to fight the 95 referendum in Montreal, also my wedding in 92, hockey, our trips driving to Orillia, beer & single malts, and so many more good times and laughs. Sadly, I missed the send of the century when your friends and family said good bye as I was half way around the world in the land that time forgot on a UN mission. Hard to believe time has flown by so fast. Sending deepest sympathies to your girls and Sandy. Buff was a great and good man who made such an impact on all he knew. Taken by God too early, still missed but always in our memories forever.

Sandy, Brittany and Mackenzie, when we think of Geoff we smile. He was a wonderful brother-in-law and we wish we had more time to enjoy his company. He always had this smile on his face like something was funny. I think he really lived his life to it's fullest doing everything with gusto. It was just much too short. We think of him often and especially on this sad day.

Mrs. Graham and Family,
I was totally shocked to see the Memoriam to Geoff in today's on-line version of the Ottawa Citizen. While a year has passed since Geoff's passing, I have to echo my former teamate Tony Panetta in that although 30 years have passed the smile is as distinct in the photo I see on-line as it was when we were team mates at Carleton.
Please accept my belated condolances.

My Darling Geoffrey, the LOML how can it be a year since I have seen you, not heard that laugh or seen the love in your eyes? The numbness has been replaced with a sadness that penitrates every fiber of my soul. The year of "firsts" has been truely horrid, I am praying, to whom I am not sure, that you will keep us strong. No regrets my love, except we weren't done yet.

We offer our deepest sympathy. When tragedy strikes and takes the life of our loved ones, many cry out with great sorrow. Your tears are not unnoticed by the Creator of Life. Never was it his purpose for our human lives to be taken away. Although your deep pain will not easily disappear, prayer to God will bring comfort to you as you grieve. The Bible assures us God "is healing the broken hearted ones, and is binding up their painful spot." Psalm 147:3

Sandy, Brittany, and Mack, It's been just over a week now since I found out about Buff's passing. I was so shocked and saddened to hear the terrible news, and felt helpless here in Sudan to attend or offer my condolences in person. He had a great family and although I rarely saw him since transferring to OPS, we always had a good laugh reminiscing about the early days in Rockland, and our time together in the Orleans Crime Unit. I spent many hours driving with him and talking about life and just cool stuff... but mostly it always came back to the Chalet, photos, you, and his precious girls, etc. I remember when they were born, and listening to his devotion to you all. I loved working with him, playing ball and golf with him, laughing at his mischievous grin and jokes, and being a proud member of the early Rockland crew with him. All the weddings and parties (amazing times). We had some great meals on surveillance in Mtl at the Brasserie off the 40 (pigs knuckles & beer). He and I shared the car as we went to Montreal to fight for Canada's unity in 95, at the big rally. Did he ever find the nice shoe he lost in the foot chase by the river in Cumberland :)? The young guns always remembered his record 4 impaired arrests in one 10 hour shift. Great memories for all time. He will be missed but fondly remembered forever and I know he watches over us all now. I'm proud to have served with him, while having the honour to call him a friend, and only wish I could have been there to pipe him out. Please accept my deepest sympathies for you and the girls. My heart goes out to you.

Sandy, Do you remember when Geoff dragged us (me for the second time in one day and you just didn't want to go) to see Monty Python's "LIFE OF BRIAN"? To say the members of Rockland Detachment in the 80's were a great group would be an under statement. Although we all moved on in our chosen career, we always found a way to stay in touch. Geoff (Buff) was a key component of that gang. He was a true team player on and off the job!

I will never forget hosting the 1990 Detachment Super Bowl party at my place. Geoff was a hoot at these social type of gatherings...Heck, he was the one who gave me the nickname "Cookie". To this day, whenever someone calls me by that name,I know there is a Rockland Detachment connection!
