I thought of you today, as I helped my 14yr old with registration for high school. My entire high school experience was spent learning from you. You're conducting classes after-school, instrument repair classes on Fridays, and the trust you placed in us on stage crew...not to mention mentoring the individual instrumental groups and running a Jazz Band. Every day for my last 3 years at North, I would ask for the "keys" to the auditorium and go play the Kawaii Baby grand, the Mark II Fender Rhodes Piano, or the Micro Moog synth and you never once second guessed what I was up to. Trust. That was his secret weapon in teaching. Class of '84

Although it is many years later, I am just now learning of Mr. Richter's passing, with great sorrow. I was a student of Mr. Richter's at WNHS in 1975 and 1976, before I moved away to Maryland in early 1977. Although Mr. Richter was only in my life for a year and a half, he created - in that short time - a love and appreciation of music that guides and influences me to this day. He was that rare teacher who could demand attention and hard work, challenge you to excellence, and give you the confidence that you could achieve those goals - all while making the entire experience fun and uplifting. His teachings and guidance live on in my life, in the lives of my children, and in all of the children that I have had the honor of influencing in my life through teaching, coaching, and guiding. Whenever I hear "Procession of the Nobles", I hear him challenging me to hit those high notes! :-) May peace and love be with you and your family.

I am just now learning of the passing of Geoff Richter. Mr. Richter was a student teacher at Cardinal Mooney HS when I was a student there. I was a trumpet player and so admired him and his enormous talent. He conducted our concert band and I tool lessons from him in the summer of 1973. I have never forgotten what a kind and patient teacher he was. I will never forget how as a young trumpet player I admired him so. My deepest condolences. He will always be in my fondest memories.

Mr. Richter was my inspiration! As I prepare to retire from a 35 year career in education, although, not as a music educator, I have SOOOOO many fond memories of Mr. Richter--what a truly inspiring, dedicated, fantastic person! Music has continued to play an unbelievable role in my life through my spouse--he is my #1 trumpet player, Mr. Richter, right up-there with him!

May you find comfort in knowing that his memories and influence carries on in my life! He was in a "class by himself!" I am forever thankful for Mr. Geoff Richter!!!!

Mr. Richter was my music teacher in the 1970's, when I attended WHSN. I played flute in and was president of the wind ensemble. He also arranged for me to sing a special solo with the ensemble during my senior year, before attending the Eastman School of Music as a voice major. I had no idea that he had passed a couple of years ago. Mr. Richter had a profound impact on my life-musically and as a great teacher and person. From reading all the entries in the guest book, it is clear that he touched many students' and other individuals' lives. His passing seems unreal. Although I did not end up having a career in music, Mr. Richter's contribution to my high school and musical experience is beyond words. Thank you. May you rest in peace. Many prayers for your family.

Dearest Richter family: I just learned the news about Mr. Richter's passing and I am deeply saddened. Please accept my heartfelt condolences for this great loss. Mr. Richter was an absolute inspiration to me. His influence has had an everlasting impact on me and my own family. As I applauded my daughter's Concert Band performance of Aaron Copeland's Lincoln Portrait - my thoughts went back as they have countless times over the years - to a Wind Ensemble concert performance of that same piece narrated by Mr. Schanzer and I was overcome. Mr. Richter taught me how to love and appreciate music and life. I am honored to have been his student for four years - and forever cherish the experience of performing under his direction. I recollect during those four years - from performing the William Tell Overture in the dark - through our Concerto Concert in 1983 - that I was keenly aware of being part of something extraordinary and in the presence of someone extraordinary. I am forever thankful for having Mr. Richter as part of my life.

Love,
Nigar

Dear Richter family: I was in the first class of Mr. Richter's in Williamsville High School North and had great respect for the wonderful person that he was. I am so sorry for your loss as I have just heard this tragic news. I will always remember his laugh and wonderful smile that was always on his face. He is the reason I went to the Eastman School of Music and I will always be eternally grateful to him. Sweet dreams Mr. Richter!

I am stunned, sad and almost without words- Mr. Richter influenced so much of my life- musically, professionally,
and academically- He was an amazing person and musician but no one knows that better than you, his beloved family.
Julia, I still remember your Dad's radiant pride when he and your Mom brought you home- I had the immense pleasure of babysitting for you when you were a baby- a LONG time ago-

My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Richter family. I was a student playing French Horn in the WHSN band, marching band, state competitions, in the musicals, and continued French Horn into college. I credit Mr. Richter for instilling in me the love of music and the persistence to get it right, and the true mastery of teamwork. It's the character of the person that stays with you - and he lived what he taught. There are many lives he touched that will keep the music playing (at the right tempo) for generations. Thoughts and prayers,

Dear Janet And Julia,
It is with great sadness and shock that we have just heard of Geoff's most untimely passing. We are devastated to have lost such a special person in our lives. As you know, we got to meet all of you years ago thru Larry Justus and The Little Berchtesgaden Restaurant, and all the fun we had with Geoff and the band on AM BUFFALO, and of late, the Olmsted Parks Conservancy where the band was featured at their 1st "Octoberfest in the Park" celebration. Through the years, our friendship with Geoff only got better. He raved about his "talented" daughter and credited his "terrific" wife for your endless patience and scheduling skills! IWe will always remember him fondly as a quality person, a respected teacher and a wonderful musician who enjoyed every minute on stage and off.
You can be sure Geoff's memory will live in our hearts and you will all be remembered in our prayers. If there is anything we can do for you, please don't hesitate to get in touch. Our heartfelt sympathies again.

To the family and friends of Geoff Richter,
I was very shocked and saddened to hear of your great loss and extend my sympathies to you. I was a student of "Mr. Richter" early in his career at Williamsville HS North and remember him with great fondness. Apart from his enthusiasm for the music and effectiveness as an educator, what stands out most 30+ years later is the memory of how he treated his students with genuine respect and warmth, and it was returned just as genuinely. I hope it gives you some peace to know that he made a very positive contribution to many lives. Please accept my sincere condolences.

Geoff Richter's life is like a pebble dropped into a large body of water, whose ripples expand across the miles and throughout the generations. He is the one we compare ourselves with as we teach our own students. He is the model we look for in our children's teachers. He is our memories of wonderful growing-up years. He will remain forever in our hearts, an influence forever in our lives. Many, many prayers to the family.

To Janet and family, We are saddened to hear of your loss. Geoff was one of our favorite customers to work with over the years. His enthusiasim for his productions was contagious. We especially remember him always wanting to dress himself and his orchestra to match. He cared so much about the performance. We ran into him in March at Rockwell hall after a St Joes performance and he was so full of life. From all of us at DC Theatricks,he will be deeply missed.

To The Richter Family –
I am so very sorry to hear about the loss of Geoff to your family. I truly cannot imagine the shock and emotional devastation you are going through -- once again reminding us how short life really is for each of us. I did want to take a few minutes to share the significance Geoff had in my life, the life of my siblings and the life of what we fondly called the West Pleasant Gang (WPG) back in the day. In addition, there was the favorite “Mom of the Pool -- Nancy” who also enjoyed and appreciated “the guards” and Geoff in particular.
The WPG lived at the pool during our growing up summer days and loved those lifeguards like they were family. We even played lifeguard in the backyard and pretended we were one of them. Of course, I must admit we all wanted to be Geoff (of course none of us were tall enough but we liked the way he twirled his whistle). He was the coolest in our eyes. He expected you to behave but he was also fun with a wonderful playful spirit. He was a great swimmer and an excellent diver. Geoff organized games – tag games such as 4 corner tag and one of our favorites the grease watermelon contest. He also organized and participated in many a water show which we loved getting ready for a performing in the early days of the Corn Festival. I remember putting on West Side Story, Puff the Major Dragon, Spinning Wheel to name a few.
Please know those memories are solid in our minds and hearts even as we move through our lives. I feel lucky to have been part of such a great time. I have taken these days to reflect and be grateful to have known such a great human being. I am sure he was a great Dad, partner and teacher – he was a natural when he was a life guard and took us all under his wing.
My deepest sympathy for your loss and great warmth for the memories.

Sincerely,

Amy Jen Jenkins

Mrs. Richter and Julia - I am profoundly sorry for your loss. I was in the class of '81 and remember when the news first broke that Mr. Richter was getting married - what a buzz of excitement as the news spread!! With all the students he had over the years and all the children of those students...the lives he touched with his gentle ways, endless jokes, and unbelievable trumpet playing must number in the tens of thousands or more. To this day my mind conjures up a vivid image of him whenever I hear Bugler's Holiday!! My love for music was molded by him and his unwavering belief in all of us. It is because of him and the wonderful environment he created that my husband and I insisted that our children play an instrument. And one day, they will insist that their children play...and so on...and Mr. Richter will live on for eternity. And the beat goes on...

I have had the privilege of working with Mr. Richter throughout my years at Mount Saint Mary's (class of 2008) in the pit orchestra for musicals. As the accompanist for a variety of shows, I remember spending extra time both before and after rehearsals working with him. I always found Mr. Richter to be so inspiring, and have learned so much from his teaching techniques. As a current music education student, I hope to become a great model for students just as he was, as his passion for music and preserverance were contagious. I extended my deepest sympathies to his family, and know that he has touched so many lives that his influence will live on!

Mr. Richter was an amazing teacher, musician, director and so much more. He expected a lot from his students and encouraged and helped us to exceed our own expectations. He let us know when we did a great job and we strove to not disappoint him. His position certainly required an amazing amount of patience, but there he was every day with a smile on his face ready to take on the task of single-handedly guiding a very large group of teenagers to make beautiful music together. Mr. Richter not only inspired us to be better musicians, but better people and many of us formed strong, lasting relationships within the confines of the Williamsville North stage and band room. His collaboration with Mr. Schanzer in bringing so many great musicals to the stage was remarkable. He seemed to have lived life to the fullest and spread his enthusiasm far and wide. The number of lives he has touched in such profound and meaningful ways is the best gift he could have given. He will be greatly missed by many. (Class of 1980; oboe and piano)

Mr Richter was such an amazing inspiration from the time I was 5 years of age. I fell in love with the WNHS holiday concerts where I watched a christmas tree grow to the music Mr Richter and his band produced. Once I entered high school, wind ensemble and musicals became a huge part of my life. To this day I am still so fond of those memories and continue to have music fulfill me. He was an amazing teacher and mentor and he will be deeply missed. WNHS 1995

Thank you for everything you taught me and so many others at North High School.

To the Richter Family:

I have four children who attended Williamsville North from 1996-2008. I also have relatives who attended Mt. St. Mary's High School and St. Joe's while Geoff Richter directed musicals there. Mr. Richter was a wonderful teacher, mentor, and musician who touched the lives of thousands of students and people in the community and made a difference in their lives. The quality of the music department at North was truly outstanding and I and my family enjoyed many hours of top-notch concerts and musicals that benefitted from Mr. Richter's dedication to excellence. His passing is a loss to the entire community. Please accept my deepest sympathy.

I remember the summer he got taller than me, then so much taller. I remember walking between him and his dad towering over me like tall bookends around a short book. I remember the three of us squeezing into the TR3, not an easy task. Playing pinochle with the guys hanging in either Mr. Downey’s band room or Mrs. Gangi’s chorus room. There was a night we got a jug of cheep wine, I think it was Thunderbird, and carried a boat down to the pond.
The tall kid with the wavy blonde hair, lantern jaw, and big smile, he could pick up the back of my sister’s Volkswagen, play basketball, sing, and blow that trumpet. He could be a hard kid to measure up with as we grew. I was often jealous. It seems like such a short time since those days. I can see he filled those years full with considerable accomplishments while seeded many lives with music as he helped seed mine. I am sorry the turns our roads made took us apart. I am sorry I allowed it to happen. It had always seemed there was time.
I am very sorry for your loss. He was an amazingly exceptional boy and man.

In memory of Geoff...a poem by Williams Woordworth:
The rainbow comes and goes, And lovely is the rose; The moon doth with delight look round her when the heavens are bare; Waters on a starry night Are beautiful and fair; The sunshine is a glorious birth; But yet I know, where'er I go,That there hath past away a glory from the earth.

This says it much better than we ever could. Our heartfelt sympathies are with you Janet , Julia, and family. We told Cody about how Geoff loved the Star Wars movies and music. May the force be with you.... and him ALWAYS!

To the entire Richter family,
I'm so sorry for your loss. Although I have not had a connection with Geoff for many years, I have memories from my childhood of a truly wonderful person. Growing up with Allison as my best friend, I spent a lot of time with the Richter family. Geoff was always someone to look up to whether it was his talent and love for music, his love for family, his teaching,or his participation in the community. I didn't know Mr. Richter that well since he only really started teacher me this year, but I loved having him as a teacher. Having him play in our Jazz Band and helping us in our concert band was simply amazing. I loved having him as a teacher. Like Gary and Mr. Hathaway he was able to make our bad days turn into the best with a warming smile that some wouldn't expect from a teacher. He made us luagh and with him gone his memory makes us cry, but he was a unique teacher that can not be forgotten easliy. I wish I could have done something to prevent him from leaving this woorld, but now I wish that his soul rests in peace. And for those people who loved him so much I think he will be proud of us. Rest in Peace Mr Richter.

100 years from now.....we all know the poem. You made a difference.....and it was huge. As, a mother and former student, my proudest moment was bringing my son, a budding musician, to Erie County Auditions and finding you were his judge. Having you meet each other meant so much. For 3 years 99-01 while I was sharing the musicals at WNHS with Lou, Jerry, Mark and Geoff I came to really appreciate the dedication and passion of all those men allowing the young students to grow and expand their horizons. Janet and Julia,

The true measure of a person comes from how he enriches the lives of those around him. Geoff is one of those people. The musicals, the concerts, his involvement in community associations to his teaching. Geoff was fortunate to touch us with his music and also give others the opportunity to realize their talents. His legacy will be heard for many, many years to come. Geoff still is enriching our lives and in our minds we can see him running up to that podium to share with all of us his passion for music. We are saddened by his passing and our thoughts are with both of you.

Geoff was my colleague and friend for 31 years. When I arrived as director of high school orchestras in Williamsville in 1979 Geoff was the director of bands at Williamsville North HS. We worked together for 11 years before I moved to Amherst HS.
I was not to miss Geoff for long. When I became conductor of the Amherst Symphony in 1997 Geoff was and continued for my 14 tenure as Principal Trumpet and de facto leader of the ASO brass section. He played in every concert that I conducted and always made a point to tell me how much he enjoyed working with me. I will miss him tremendously and the way he lived his life will always inspire me.

Thank you for everything you have done for the Mount. I have had the pleasure of working with Geoff in not only Mount's production of "Bye Bye Birdie," but also in the concert and jazz band there. I remember in the musical last year, I always thought he was a genius! He always helped us warm up, and learn all the harmonies for the songs. He always had a positive attitude towards everything. These past couple months in both concert and jazz band, he was always there to help me learn solos on my clarinet and sax for competition. At first I was nervous, and I would usually go down to the aud every week to work with him. He made it so much fun and I learned it in no time. Geoff, always took time off to work with me, until I felt comfortable. He taught me to always keep trying and never give up. He was always there for me, and I cherish every moment I spent with him. He was such a great man. Thanks again, for everything. He made me the great musician I am today, and was always there to keep everyone positive. He always made us laugh, and was so very dedicated to music. I looked up to him, as a role model, and literally! Condolences to his family at this tough time.i'm sure he's creating his own great band right now.

My thoughts and prayers are with all the Richter family and friends in this time of sadness. I never had the privilege of having Mr. Richter as a teacher since I was in chorus, not band, but I did get to interact with him during musicals. He was an amazing influence on so many of us at North, even those of us who rarely got to interact with him. I was incredibly sad to hear of his passing. This world has lost an amazing musician, teacher and man. Heaven is lucky and probably full of music right now!

Dear Janet and Julia,

I was a freshman at North Geoff's first year of teaching there. His love of music and life was evident and a connection was immediate between him and all his students. He accepted nothing but the very best from all of us and he showed us the way to accomplish it. It didn't matter if it was our music, studies, sports or any other activity.

I reconnected with Geoff many years later at St. Pius X upon returning to this area. It was like I never left.

My deepest thanks to him for setting such a wonderful example. I will remember him always.

Words can not express the sorrow you must be feeing. My prayers are with you.

God Bless.

May 28, 2010

Jan and Julia,
Geoff was such a vibrant, intelligent and funny man! The Frankfurters will never be the same. I'll continue to keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. God bless!

I don't have words for this tragic loss. Your husband and father touched so many lives, and you should be proud of what an extraordinary man he was. His former students and friends will always remember him...

May 28, 2010

Janet & Julia - having five of our six children under the guidance of Geof, we can really say that we will always remember him as the true leader of two of them as educational music teachers. We see his patience, motivation, and devotion to his musicality whenever we attend one of Mike's or Craig's concerts. Just the way Craig begins and conducts his band is a reflection of Geof in many ways.
We will pray for him and you both for the repose of his soul and your belief in God our Father.

Sincerely,
Bob & Claire Poissant

Geoff will be sadly missed in so many ways. I was associated with Geoff as a teacher at Williamsville North HS for several years in the 1970s. It was there where i acquired the respect which never left. As i observed him in his extra curricular activites, the respect and admiration only increased.

A great person in oh so many ways who will be missed in oh so many ways by oh so many people. The family can be very proud as they work their way through this period of grief.

His passing has allowed me to reflect on the impossibly high standards he set not only for his students but for himself as a teacher. Geof was uncompromising and showed us how we could achieve the impossible by being uncompromising ourselves. He always saw my potential and never let me settle for anything less. Mr. Richter always had so many students that looked up to him and who looked to him for advice, friendship, and guidance. Somehow though, he always made you feel like you were the most important student to him. Thanks Geof.

Janet and Julia - Geoff would be overwhelmed by knowing how many people he touched during his life. Now, God is saying, "Job well done - good and faithful servant - welcome home". There is a real sadness within our St Pius X Parish Community today. One more place where he was well respected and cared about.

I have had the pleasure of working with Geoff in Mount Saint Mary and St. Joe’s musicals from Beauty and the Beast to Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. So many memories have been going through my mind. I remember thinking to myself “Wow! He’s a genius!” when we first worked on “Iowa Stubborn” with him in The Music Man. He always worked so hard to try to get the MSM chorus to sing a harmony together or would be clapping out the two different rhythms over and over again in “American Boy” from Bye Bye Birdie until everyone got it (this took a while!). It was hilarious when he told me to be sexier during “The Shriner’s Dance” and taught me how to work the curtain. We had so much fun! And of course, I don’t know what I would’ve done while I was ill during Joseph without his positive attitude. He has truly touched us all in so many ways with his passion whether a performer, musician, etc. I cherish every moment I’ve spent with him. Janet and Julia, thank you so much for sharing him with me. He was such a wonderful man. It will be an honor to sing his funeral on Saturday.

Memories are too many to recount. I was in awe by the man he was, during the most impressionable time of a boys life. I couldn't have asked for a better role model. I had walked away from music so many times, something that came naturally to me, I constantly declined to nurture under pressure to practice. He found other ways to get through to me, to help me understand the gift I had been given by my parents, and had neglected. Mr. Richter found a way to get me to be excited about performing again, and in doing so, opened up the worlds of theater, technology, and design - the lessons of which I still use today. Geoff - Thank you for giving thousands of kids the opportunity to know the joy that fills the heart with music, balanced with the competition and comradeship of sports. You where the inspiration, that kept so many young lives on track, and there is not one of us who could thank you enough. Rest in peace.

I am sad now that I have heard of the passing of Mr. Richter. I wanted to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of this great teacher who had a passionate love for music. I played the french horn in concert band and wind ensemble from 1990-1993. While I wasn't the best, I will remember that Mr. Richter never wavered from his encouragement, desire for me to improve and most importantly his kindness. He always emphasized a strong work ethic and this sticks with me to this day. He really made the band and wind ensemble experience fun for us as he organized a lot of concerts, enrolled our wind ensemble in a NY State Competition in Jamestown, NY and took us on some great trips where we performed in Orlando, FL for Disney Magic Music Days and several landmarks in the Washington DC area. I also knew that Geoff was a man of faith. His great life journey, dedication to music and love to his family is a testement to this faith. May the Lord comfort all friends and family members in this difficult time.

On behalf of the members of the Los Angeles Pierce Symphonic Winds, we offer our most sincere condolences to Geoff's family, friends and colleagues. We will never forget his impassioned rendition of "America the Beautiful" when the LA Winds were priviliged to perform under his inspired leadership as we shared the stage with his Buffalo Niagara Concert Band.

In 1984-5 I had the great pleasure of getting to know Geoff while I was conductor of the Erie County Music Educators' Wind Ensemble. Through that experience and experiences to follow, I learned that Geoff was a wonderful trumpet player, person, teacher, and leader in the profession. I will always be grateful for that experience and grateful to have had a chance to know him in a small way. Please accept my sincere condolences.

I knew Geoff when he was a lifeguard at the Eden Pool. He made a big difference in many peoples lives. He encouraged us in so many different ways and always made being up there a blast. I look back upon those years at the Eden Pool and know he made me a better person by his positive approach. My sympathy goes out to his wife and family as well as his parents. My prayers are with you.

I wish to say how sad I was to hear of Mr. Richter's passing. I was his first full time string bass player and he was my friend and teacher. After I left school I would see him every year playing at St. Mary's and drinking beer. He always made a huge effort to make sure I was in the spirit! with a few pints! We had a amazing trip to Washington D.C. and he managed to keep a crazy group of kids focused and yet have a blast. He has left us in body but his love of his craft lives on as well as his values in all of us who had the pleasure to have him as a mentor. Sam Bagley Class of 1979

Geoff was a huge influence on my life. He encouraged me to compose and stretch my musical horizons. He was the consumate performer, teacher, and mentor.
