Georg Kamm Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 30, 2023.
Georg Dieter Kamm, also known as baba Kamm, passed away on 15 November 2023, at the age of 83 in Mailisita, Tanzania. He was born on 16 October 1940, in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany. Georg was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Blessed with insurmountable wisdom and deeply involved in his faith, he touched the lives of thousands. Georg left us with a lasting impression of a truly loving and loyal husband to his wife, Mama Kamm. They were married for over 50 years and were the picture of love. No one knew baba Kamm without Mama Kamm because they were never far away from each other. They complemented each other and created a life together, building a family, education centers, health centers, and much, much more. Together, they built a community.

Georg was a man of many interests and talents. He had a deep love for music and often played his organ. He was an avid reader of Scripture and shared his knowledge and wisdom with others. Georg had a special fondness for his German heritage and cherished his German family. He traveled to various countries, including Germany, England, Austria, Switzerland, Greece, and Rome, educating his children with worldly knowledge.

One of Georg's greatest joys was spending time with his grandchildren. He had a special bond with each of them, talking to them in jovial words and singing to make them laugh. His family will easily envision his grandchildren walking alongside their Babu in his shorts and suspenders.

In Tanzania, Georg had special friendships with the Maasai and proudly wore kitenge shirts made by Mama Clementina Foundation. He also had a special connection with the school children of Little Clementines and MCF paradise.

Georg will be deeply missed by his surviving family members. He is survived by his beloved wife, Dr. Maria J. Kamm, his daughter Katrin Mwimbe Böhl, his sons Georg Christian (Marisela) Kamm and Yohannes (Selma) Kamm, and his sister Gerlinde (Wolfgang) Lieske. He was a loving grandfather to Vera Isabella, Georg Francisco, Marlene, Friedrich Antonio, Hugo, Sofie Alessandra, Josephine, Christian Ngomi, and Daniel. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Georg was preceded in death by his parents, Georg and Sofie Kamm, his brother Helmut (Ursula) Kamm, his sister Lote (Friedrich) Graf, and his loving friend Vera Joschko.

Georg's educational journey led him to the University of Mainz, where he took his first steps in medicine. He began his career as an anesthesiologist at Machame Lutheran Hospital and co-authored his book, "Machame Anaesthesia Notebook for Medical Auxiliaries: With Special Emphasis on the Developing Countries" about his portable anesthesia device. Georg was a visionary and made significant contributions to the medical field. He founded the St. Luke's ELCT Infusion Projects and invented a water purification system to make IV fluids. He also founded the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical College School of Pharmacy and served as a consultant for the KCMC School of Radiology and Dodoma Christian Medical Centre. Georg's dedication and expertise were recognized, and he was the recipient of the prestigious Franz Kuhn Award. He was also a consultant for the Tanzania Health Partnership and the founder of Mama Clementina Foundation. Georg was even honored with a key to the Medieval Town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Georg had a passion for farming. He was an innovator beyond imagination and changed the lives of thousands through his work. He enjoyed farming and took care of cows, goats, fish, and pigs. He also had a green thumb and was a skilled botanist, cultivating tomato, mango, avocado, mushroom, and honey bees. Georg made homemade yogurt, cheeses, sausages, and harvested honey.

A Man of Servitude
Baba Kamm was a man in service to God and his faith. He served on the board of two Lutheran churches, Ushirika wa Neema Lutheran Church and Nkweseko Lutheran Church in Machame, Tanzania. He was often seen reading his Bible, and we all know that he aimed to please His Creator. God chose the right man to do His work right here in the Kilimanjaro Region. He lived a life of hope, service, and unending aid. He was the type of man to never give up, even when failure seemed inevitable. He always found a way to give life to the projects he envisioned for Tanzanians. He loved Tanzania. He loved sharing his treasured life at Berghof with all who crossed his path. His family wishes to thank all who allowed him to be their servant. baba Kamm saw people's potential and never gave up on them; in fact, he became friends with almost all the people with whom he came in contact. In a way, through his work with other people, his children and grandchildren saw who he really was–a man of servitude. He served his family, his community, and most of all, he served God.

A ceremony to honor Georg Dieter Kamm was held at Berghof in Mailisita, where he was laid to rest. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Mama Clementina Foundation through the following link: MamaClementinaFoundation [https://klodge-tanzania.com/mama-clementina-foundation/].

My father-in-law was a dream come true. We had many special moments. We would sit and talk about God and the philosophies of life that he encountered. About the people he met in all areas of Tanzania, including remote areas where he spent time to install an Infusion Units machine. He knew everyone, and everyone knew him. When I was a part of KCMC, many of my mentors were delivered at his hands. They knew him, too, and he brought many smiles to the OR rooms. Perhaps our best times were sharing cakes and pastries. Once I knew what he liked, I baked them, just for him, and that made our visits even better!

As you see in the picture with his grandchildren, pure, PURE love and joy. I say it all the time, "My kids are amazing, loving and kind because they grew up around their grandparents."

Much love to Papa Mwimbe. Pray for us!

Baba Kamm, a kind-hearted man, a father to many of us. I first met him in 1984 when I came to Moshi with my late mom to do interviews at some private schools. We stayed with Baba & Mama Kamm at Bergof for a few days. We had a very pleasant stay with both Baba & Mama, at that time Ngomi was a little boy. From there I knew and told myself these must be very nice people.

That fact became even clearer after joining Weruweru the following year. He did a lot for the Weruweru community despite of his other many duties.

The last time I saw him around 6 years ago, I remember he asked me `are you happy ?.´ That question in itself shows someone has a good caring heart.

Rest in eternal peace Baba Kamm, till we meet again.
