George W. Arney

- - We salute the life of George W. Arney who went on to be with the Lord on July 8, 2018 with his family by his side. George was born to the late Catherine and George E. Arney and lived his early years on the West Side of Manhattan--his was a true West Side Story. He later moved with his parents to New Jersey where he resided for the rest of his years. He was a life-long Giant fan. George was a graduate of Sayreville High School. He served with pride in the United States Marine Corps and was deployed during the 1958 Beirut Lebanon Crisis. While raising his young family, George worked a variety of jobs to put himself through college going on to graduate from Seton Hall University. It was during the course of one of these jobs as a Longshoreman that he met with President and Mrs. Eisenhower. Ike spoke with him for about half an hour. It was one of his favorite stories. George went on to become a Human Resources manager. He worked for a number of major national corporations as well as international, national and local banks. George finished his career at the Ocean County Utilities Authority as Director of Human Resources--he said that it was the best job that he ever had. He was happily retired for the past five years. George leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife Margaret, his son William Arney, his daughter Cathleen Talian, his son-in-law Michael Talian, his grandaughter Grace Talian and his grandson Joshua Talian. He is also survived by his cherished sister Beverly Wetzel, her two children Marissa Wetzel and Britton Wetzel along with their families. Viewing hours will be held on Monday July 16 from 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm and Tuesday from 9:30am to 10:30am at Maxwell Funeral Home 160 Mathistown Road Little Egg Harbor, NJ 08087. George Arney was one of the most good hearted guys I ever met. He was a gentle giant . He came off tough but he had a kind heart . Growing up my teenage years I practically lived at the Arneys house . They feed me , took me out to eat with them , I even remember them taking me on a family vacation to Wildwood . I have so many memories . George , thank you . I loved you like a Dad . Semper Fi .

Dear Margaret and family. I was saddened to read this. George was the salt of the earth. He always had that big smile on his face and always portrayed that he could battle anything. We always had some nice chats about the USMC and each time he came into our office George ALWAYS asked about my son, also a Marine.I will never forget him or you, too. You will be in my thoughts and prayers, Margaret. SEMPER FI

I met Pvt. Arney on the train going to Paris Island 1957. We became friends at boot camp and were assigned to the same unit after boot camp India Bat, 3rd BN, 10th Marines. We went on a Med cruise in 1958 and ended up in Lebanon. We exchanged personal stories about our life before the Corps. I can't go into details. He was a great part of my life if only for a short time. Over the years I have thought of him often.
