George Atkins Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 23 to Jan. 28, 2015.
April 10, 1932-Jan. 21, 2015 ATKINS, George Arthur, of Hoover and Lake Martin, age 82, died January 21, 2015 peacefully at his home with his loving family around him. He was born in Birmingham on April 10, 1932, grew up in West End, and graduated from Shades Valley High School in 1950. As a walk-on, he earned a football scholarship at Auburn University (then A.P.I.), lettered three years, played in the NFL with the Detroit Lions, and for sixteen years (1956–1971) coached the offensive line at Auburn for Coach Ralph Jordan. After working in Birmingham for ten years, he returned to Auburn in 1982 to work in university development. He was particularly proud of the success of the Generations Campaign and his work helping to raise the funds to enlarge the Draughon Library. He retired from Auburn University in 1995, and always stayed busy helping others, especially those who were recently diagnosed diabetics. He was a devoted father who loved his four children, who taught them how to make it through rough times, and how to be strong. As a coach, he was a disciplinarian, demanding the very best from his players. He drove them hard toward perfection, but loved them and when they needed him, he was always there. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time at Lake Martin. He was preceded in death by this parents, Raymond Wallace Atkins and Nora Hanbury Atkins, his brother Ray Anthony Atkins, and his son, George Timothy Atkins. He leaves behind to celebrate his life and cherish their memories, his high school sweetheart and wife of 60 years, Leah Marie Rawls Atkins; his daughter Laura Leigh Drake (Kealon) and his two sons, R. Brian Atkins (Kathy) of Vestavia Hills and son Jack R. Atkins (Nikki), of Auburn; daughter-in-law Stacye Hathorn of Tallassee (Tim); sixteen grandchildren- Elaine Atkins Thomaston (Casey), George W. Atkins (Andrea), Charlcie Hathorn, Jean Leah Atkins, Katie Atkins Gregg (John), Margaret Anne Atkins Fyfe (Adam), Michael A. Atkins, Olivia Noel Atkins, Elizabeth Anne Drake, Kealon Drake Jr., George Dalton Drake, Taylor Ann Atkins, Avery Atkins, Holly Ibanez, Victor Ibanez, and Nicholas Ibanez, and three great-grandsons, Noah Timothy Thomaston, Matthew George Atkins, and George Russler Fyfe. A celebration of his life will be held at the Chapel at Church of the Highlands, Grants Mill Campus at 10:00 am, Wednesday, January 28. The family will receive friends at a reception following the celebration. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to the Ralph and Evelyn Jordan Scholarship of the Auburn Football Lettermen's Club, P. O. Box 828, Auburn, AL 36831-0828.

George Atkins was a man of integrity. The epitome of character and class. We were honored to know Coach Atkins through long time friendships with his son and daughter in-law, Jack and Nikki. The Atkins family are in our thoughts and prayers during this time.

Most Sincerely,

I am praying for your family in the loss of Mr. Adkins. I always enjoyed working for him as an electrician but more so the conversations we had about his love for his family and his love for Auburn Univ. May God bless you all during this time.

My wife, Patricia, and I were saddened to hear about George, who was devoted to his wife of sixty years, Leah, his family, community and Auburn University. As we grieve about his loss, let us take this opportunity to celebrate and honor the full and wonderful life of a talented athlete, coach, businessman and family patriarch, who touched so many lives with his kindness, generosity and inspiration.

George Atkins ' passing marks the end of an era for many of us. He was a strongly disciplined man who set a wonderful example for his players. He pushed them hard on the field, but became a father figure to many of them off of the field. He will be missed.

I am so sorry to hear about Coach Atkins. He and Mrs. Atkins have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember and I have happy memories from the "cabin" on the lake. I am honored to have known him.

An end of an era for many of us. Oh, the stories I've heard of his coaching years at Auburn. He was a man of deep integrity, highly disciplined, generous, and always there for his former players. He set the bar high for the rest. I'm so thankful that he is at peace but will cherish the memories of him always .

What a great man! "Uncle George" and my father, Jack could be found on the waters of Lake Martin, grilling out, or just reliving days of Auburn Football. Good food and laughter are the memories I have of a childhood with the Atkins. No matter where you were in the house, you could hear George and Jack's laughter.....and Uncle George had the most wonderful, fun-loving and delightful laugh! I can hear it to this day......remembrances of a special childhood afforded me by great parents and their wonderful friends! War Eagle, Kimosobee!

I would like to share my condolences with Mrs. Atkins and family and friends. Being no stranger to the loss of a husband I can some what relate to your pain over the loss of your husband. What brought me great comfort were the words in 2kings. 20:5 I heard your prayers , I saw your tears, I will heal you. I hope you are comforted by the thought that a stranger is thinking of.
