Dr. Tom Barrows, 79, of Kansas City, Missouri passed away Sunday, April 24, 2011.

Memorial services will be Wednesday, April 27th beginning at 2:30PM at Mount Moriah Terrace Park Funeral Home, with visitation from 1 to 2:30. Burial will be at Mount Moriah Terrace Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the University of Missouri School of Veterinary Medicine, in memory of Dr. George Thomas Barrows.

Tom was born April 1, 1932 in Jamesport, Missouri to Martha Hillyard Barrows and George Leroy Barrows. He graduated from Trenton High School in 1950, signing a football scholarship for his Freshman year at his beloved University of Missouri. While at MU he was a Knight of the Kappa Alpha Order and a member of the ROTC. He was later activated in the US Army and served in the Reserves until 1962. He graduated in 1957 from the University of Missouri School of Veterinary Medicine. From there he began his career in Macon, MO where he was a "country" veterinarian serving the surrounding rural communi-ties. In 1965, he moved to Kansas City where he became a partner in Eagle Animal Hospital in Riverside, MO and later opened Platte Woods Animal Hospital. In 1993 he semi-retired and moved to Atlanta, GA where he continued to practice and perform surgery as an "on call" veterinarian.

Dr. Barrows was a life long learner and held a Veterinary Medical license in 8 states and specialized in orthopedic animal surgery. He was a former President of the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association, was a former Chairman of the Missouri Veterinary Medical Board, and held various positions in the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association, the Greater Atlanta Veterinary Association, and the American Veterinary Medical Association. He was instrumental in helping to achieve the certification of the Veterinary Technician program for the state of Missouri and implementa-tion of the program at Maple Woods Community College.

His family and the care of animals were his passion as well as his time spent flying his private plane, whenever and wherever he could. He showed us all how to enjoy life.

Tom is survived by his wife of 31 years, Paula; daughter and son in law: Janet and Mark Rao of Parkville, MO; son and daughter in law: Jim and Nancy Barrows of Plattsburg, MO; daughter and future son in law: Jessica Barrows and Shayne Woodard of Atlanta, GA; sister Kathryn Casady-Smith and husband Dr. Robert Smith of Sequim, WA; grandchildren: Vanessa Waters, Megan Rao, Chandler Kimrey, Jennifer Barrows, and Jimmy Barrows; nephews Brian Casady and wife Ruth of Olathe, KS and Paul Casady and wife Shelly of Leawood, KS. Paula, I am so sorry for your loss. Dr. "B" was so good to me. I graduated from Gwinnett Tech in the very first Vet Tech class there. I also worked with Tom at multiple hospitals. He was a great teacher and a generous man. He wanted nothing but the best for all that he worked with and always provided guidance. He will be missed.

Paula,
I just found out about Tom's passing when I read about it in the GVMA newsletter. I was saddened to hear the news. He was a great mentor for me when I started the vet tech program at Gwinnett Tech. He was always so "pro-tech"! I knew him to be a great friend and veterinarian. He will be missed.

Paula, Kyle and I were saddened to hear about Tom's death. Please accept our heartfelt condolences. It seems impossible that it was over 30 years ago that you and Tom were married. And, equally hard to believe that little Jessica has grown up and is now engaged.

Paula,Jim & Janet,
I am sorry to hear about Dr Barrrows.
I worked for him in 1974- 1979 as his veterinary technician. He was one of my favorite people when I lived up in KC.
I loved his philosophical comments and the way he approached life.
Take care,

Tom has been my very kind and loving husband and partner in life. I don't think I have known anyone more passionate about life and dedicated to his family and his profession. His every breathing moment was dedicated to the betterment of veterinary medicine and mentoring and coaching of the people around him. He loved teaching and sharing his knowledge -- on an individual basis and in organized fashions (like the work to put the Maple Woods Animal Technician program in place and later support and teaching at Gwinnett Tech in Georgia in the Veterinary Assistants program). Due to his active support of the local, state, and national level veterinary associations, he made many life long friends. In Missouri, he was very proud of the accomplishments with the veterinary technician program and the rewriting of the practice act. He took this work with him to Georgia and helped them get started with the process as well. In Georgia, Tom continued to practice and became very active at the Atlanta and Georgia level, having major responsibilities for the state's continuing education program. In his later professional years, he was an early practitioner with laser surgery in Atlanta and on the Judicial Council at the national level. He played hard and he worked hard and wanted to practice veterinary medicine until the day he died. Hopefully now he is able to free his mind and body to continue his pursuits. We will miss him immensely!!

Dear Paula, Janet and Martha, And the rest of the family as well.
Tom was a great Vet and friend. I enjoyed the time we spent together at Vet-Med school at Mizzou, as well as later at Eagle Animal. He will be missed. Please accept my deepest sympathy

GT was not only my Uncle, but my friend, and he was great at both. He is the reason I have a passion for aviation, and encouraged me to continue to get my ratings and be the best pilot I could be. When I graduated from HS, and I was staying a few weeks with him, he told me he would support me in anything I wanted to do and run "interference" with my folks. He always did (both!). He was a good mentor. He never believed he would live past 40, he once told me. I know with his love of life the last few years have been difficult, but I envision now he and Martha are flying down to the Rio Grande Valley where it is warm!
God Bless

Tom will always have a special place in my heart. I met his friend, Ben, wwho became my husband, while working at Eagle. We had many wonderful trips together. Our engine out landing in Nassau after a total avionics failure and being lost in the Bermuda Triangle was life changing.

My heart hurts for you as you adjust to your loss. My prayers are for your comfort in your memories and peace in knowing that Tom's struggles here are over.

Have known Tom since our times during the 50's as students of veterinary med. at University of Mo. I have the highest regards for him as a colleague serving many years with him as member of KCVMA as well as legislative comentment with the U of Mo School of Veterinary Med. and Mo. Veterinary Medical Assoc. It was Jan. 2010 that Tom flew with me to Branson Mo. for attendance to Past Pres. Luncheon a trip which we both enjoyed as we shared are past experiences as the pilots of General Aviation, a passion we both enjoyed.
He was a tremendous asset to our profession and will be missed by all who knew and had associated with him.
