George Beard Obituary
Mr. Beard was born to George Plummer Beard, Sr. and Lillian White Beard, April 18, 1921 at Eastern View Farm, Culpeper, Virginia.
Surviving Mr. Beard are his children, Susan B. Wohllben and her husband Alan, Dick Beard and his wife Paula, Tim Beard, Robert W. Beard and his wife Nancy, all of Culpeper, Virginia and Jack Beard of Colton, California; his grandchildren, Beth Wohllben Lepp and her husband Jason, Richard Beard, Lori Anne Wohllben, Christopher Beard and Michelle and Carson W. Beard; his great-granddaughter, Emileigh Alexis Beard and sister, Mary B. Packard and her husband Jim of Huntsville, Alabama. Also a number of nieces and nephews survive Mr. Beard.
Preceding him in death are his parents and wife, Lorraine Weaver Beard.
Mr. Beard served in the U.S. Army in Europe in World War II, was awarded the Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge and a battlefield commission.
He retired from Second National Bank as Chairman of the Board, having previously served as President and CEO of the bank. He served, as a Delegate to the Virginia General Assembly from 1978 to 1988. He was the third recipient of the L. B. Henretty Award presented by the Chamber of Commerce to an outstanding citizen of Culpeper County. He served as President of the Virginia Bankers Association 19781979, President of the Culpeper County Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Culpeper County School Board, and as the first Treasurer of Culpeper Memorial Hospital. He was a member of the Rotary Club, VFW, American Legion, and Fairfax Lodge (no. 43) AF and AM, from which he recently received his 60-year membership pin.
All funeral services are private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Culpeper Vol. Fire Department, 151 West Davis Street, Culpeper, Virginia 22701 or to the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, REC, P.O. Box 392, Culpeper, Virginia 22701, Attn: Kathy Stunkle.

Susan and family,
Just wanted you to know how much
we all thought of your father. He was such a down to earth guy and
spoke to everyone. The Bank was never the same when he retired!! He

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

The Family of George Beard,
George was a wonderful family member and we are so thankful for his help sharing with the White-Beard family tree. He may be gone but his memories will last forever within our hearts.

To the Beard family: We are so sorry to learn of George's death. He was truly a Culpeper statesman and did so much good for his community. We enjoyed our association with him and Lorraine at many banking functions. Even though we were competitors, we had the utmost respect for each other. We are thinking of all of you.

We first met your Dad when we were shopping for a mortgage in 1971. As we were being interviewed by another employee of the bank, George came out of an adjacent office and said, "Did I hear the name Murray? Are you kin to Jackie White Murray of Syria? (Yes.) He said, "Cousin!" and instructed the employee to be good to us. At Jackie's graveside service in 2000, George recounted warm memories of his childhood experiences with Jackie. There will be an empty seat at the annual White family reunion in Syria and an empty place in the hearts of the thousands of people whose lives he enriched.

My wife and I will always have fond memories of George Beard. He was the first person to make us feel welcome when we moved here. When we wanted to buy a house and the other bank in town turned us down, he found a way for us to manage it. When the chess club at school needed boxes for chess sets, he personally went around collecting boxes! When I needed to talk to a school board member, he was willing to listen, even though I wasn't one of the "elite" few. I remember him sitting in his favorite pew in the Presbyterian Church. I remember his humility. When most people become important, it goes to their heads, but this never happened to him. He always had an open mind, not an empty one! He was a great guy!!

have lost a great man. George Beard was one of the great memories I
will always have of Culpeper. He was a big supporter of CHS basketball
and we could not have done alot of the things that we did without his

Susan and family. So sorry to hear about the loss of your Dad. I lost my Dad two years ago. It is hard but we have wonderful memories.
You are in my thoughts and prayers.
Your Dad was a wonderful person and I always remember him coming into Gayhearts when I worked there as a teenager! He was always cheerful and upbeat and stopped to talk to everyone.
